ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- With allegations being peddled by the Opposition that the freezers for the BVI Fishing Complex have been given away, the whereabouts of the equipment will be asked at the Fifth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fourth House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands today, February 20, 2020.

“I understand the walk-in freezers and all the other stuff that we spent thousands and thousands of dollars on were given away a couple of weeks ago,” Opposition Member and Second District Representative, Hon Melvin M. Turnbull said during a public meeting on February 10, 2020 at the Ivan Dawson Primary School in Cane Garden Bay.

The question about the freezers; however, according to the Order Paper, will be asked by Leader of the Opposition and Member for the Eighth District, Hon Marlon A. Penn.

Where are the freezers?

The Opposition Leader will ask Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries, Dr The Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) to “Please advise what happened to all the fishing equipment, freezers and other items that were at that facility?”

Hon Penn will also ask Dr Wheatley if his Ministry plans to reopen the Fisheries facility at Baughers Bay.

“If the answer is no, please advise where the new Fisheries facility will go and when is this expected to happen?”

Fishing Complex to be relocated

Dr Wheatley, during the budget debate in the House of Assembly on December 13, 2019, had said a location had been identified for the new fishing complex; however, he did not reveal the proposed site.

The Minister had stated that the fishing complex had to be relocated to facilitate Port Purcell’s in keeping its certification that requires the facility to have a certain amount of space to operate.

The building, which was damaged by Hurricane Irma in September 2017 will be demolished.

While you’re looking for the freezers how about looking for all the generators the UK donated for use in the public shelters after Irma.

During a budget debate in the House of Assembly in December 2019, Dr Wheatley mentioned that a location had been identified for the new fishing complex; however, he did not disclose the specific site at that time. The relocation of the fishing complex was deemed necessary to comply with Port Purcell's certification requirements, which necessitated a certain amount of operating space. The building that was damaged by Hurricane Irma in September 2017 will be demolished as part of this relocation process. geometry dash subzero
