West Gunners defeat YEP
A nervous defense orientated first quarter from both sides saw the West Gunners take a slender 8-6 lead into the second quarter, which then they extended to 18-8 at the half time break.
Taking advantage of rotations on the Gunners bench, the YEP, who have only been together a month or so, reduced the deficit to 8 points at 22-14, but couldn’t maintain the pressure during the fourth quarter to end up down by 6 at the buzzer.
Dre Penn top scored with 9 points and added 4 rebounds as well as 3 blocks to his game winning tally. Raheem Hodge scored 7 points, Ajai Frett 6 with 5 rebounds and T’Quan Stoutt 4 points.
For the YEP Keneya Penn scored 7 points, Kachite 6 points and Jeshaun 3 points with 4 rebounds.
After the Game Coach of the West Gunners, Hon Andrew A. Fahie, applauded the performance of the YEP and admitted that having watched them play in the semi finals against the Young Starz, he was worried. “I was very impressed with them when they beat the Ghut and had to make some adjustments” he said, going onto praise Keneya Penn in particular, “She killed the Ghut with her right hand and she shouldn’t be vexed that we played a little hard on her.”
He also praised League Organiser Milton McLean for his continued hard work and the support of Hon Julian Fraser RA, District 3 Representative and newly elected Chairman of the VIP Party, who commented how pleased he was with both teams and also that both included Ladies “For a team that just got together the YEP played really well and they shouldn’t be feel bad about losing today. The Gunners have a hell of a coach and have been playing in these leagues a while, so don’t expect them to roll over!
He concluded his remarks by saying how great it was that the YEP had made the effort to come to Sea Cows Bay and how there would be a place for them in future SCBBC Leagues as well as the Julian Fraser/Save the Seed League, which begins in August.
In the semi finals the YEP had overcome the Young Starz, 40-38, in overtime with Penn and Malaki both scoring 9 points. Shakay scored 8 points whilst for the Starz, J’Quan Bodkin notched 11 points with 10 rebounds, T’Quan Bodkin 7 points, Leroy Hughes 6 and Keanu Baker 6 points with 3 rebounds.
