ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Revealing statistics showing that the first half of 2024 marked historic visitor arrivals, [British] Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said the VI is on a good track as it pertains to tourism under the Virgin Islands Party Government (VIP).

Totalling 682,773 visitors as opposed to 582,674 in 2023 at a 17.2% increase, the Premier speaking during a sitting of the House of Assembly on July 4, 2024, said. "The economy is the worst it has ever been, according to what I’m hearing from the other side. Madam Speaker, how does that square with facts?”

“We’re on a good track as it pertains to our tourism visitor… And I believe that there was some acknowledgement that there were some people who were benefiting [at the Pier Park].

“And [when] a cruise ship [is] there I see people buying things from the stores and the vendors. I see people on Long Bay, Beef Island, they are making some money from tourism. It's not just Cane Garden Bay, money is being spread around.”

The Premier said events outside of Music Festival, Spring Regattas, BVI Wreck Week and the sporting tournaments all contribute to tourism numbers and more like car rentals, hotel and accommodations and provisioning of yachts.

Financial services sector also improving - Premier

“If you’re objective and you're fair, you will accept these facts, but if you're just trying to prove a point for your own benefit, you'll reject these facts.”

Dr Wheatley added that financial services is also doing well. "We're holding the strain…But we've been able to hold the strain and financial services…We're doing very well,” he added.

He said in terms of other sectors in the VI, the country is making more revenues than it has ever made in financial services.

“So when we say that we are not doing well, I don’t want to discount the fact that we have problems in our economy… and I can identify where the problems are in our economy, these are challenges that have existed over time.”

Premier Wheatley said some of these problems include accessing of money by some in the economy and that some persons in the Virgin Islands don’t want to employ Virgin Islanders," which he acknowledged the government would have to put systems in place to address.

Are they here for head tax only or are they touring and spending money and not staying on the ship and the ship’s entertainment keeping them from coming off.

Ok. The number of visitors are are increasing. Are increasing numbers cruise, one-day, few hours visitors, or long term stay, over night visitors? How is the average citizen on average benefitting from the increasing??Are their quality of life, standard of living,,hunan development index, increasing delivery of services, etc..Further, is the increasing numbers resulting in direct, indirect, and induced employment? Are the increasing numbers stressing and straining the attractions?

Facts. Agreed 100% with the Premier. Cruise Passenger is the future. Reason why we should put more effort and focus into another Cruise ship Doc.. This is Easy, Deepened, extend and strengthen Virgin Gorda Ferry Dock to accommodate additional cruise ship go to VG. Nice up the arrival area..relocate the VG ferry Dock to the Yacht Harbour...Spread the prosperity to all the Islands , increases small businesses...The Caribbean is striving on Cruise ship..Let us be visionaries, we were once leaders in this industry. Now we are waay behind. Lets reclaim our rightful position. Premier, its time to lead, be strong, we know the few strong voices will opposed almost anything you do..Remember make decisions now that 40 yrs from now, we can say proudly, Premier Sowande Wheatley did that...Amen. I believe in you Premier.

Why this man keep looking at cruise ships as the indicator for how good bvi tourism is? And he is the minister responsible for tourism? He don’t know that over night tourists spend 10 times what a cruise ship tourist spend? He ain’t watching where places like Majorca actually refusing tourists? Where St Barths has a limit in the number of tourists that can come every year? Out tourism shouldn’t be about how many tourists come but instead on the type of tourists that come. But premier, board of tourism, director of tourism and all the rest have no idea what they are doing. All clueless with the blind leading the dumb.

You villa people are so obvious. Why can't we cater to all tourists? Why does it have to be one or the other? Further do you guys even realize that the BVI only cater to the higher end cruise ships and not ALL ships? Do some research before talking nonsense. The issue here is when people don't benefit directly from something, they do not like it!

Better off tourists don't want to be around budget travelers. That's not just in the BVI, it's everywhere. Either you're an upscale destination or you're mass market.

Some higher end cruise lines come to the BVI, Seaborn and Silversea, for example. The big ships that come into Road Town, MSC and Disney for example, are low-end cruise lines. A quick check of the Internet will show you their rates.

People don't want to spend $20k/week renting a villa or chartering a boat to be around the hoi polloi. The charter guests are out on the water; the real impact has been in villa rentals. Those folks won't be caught dead on Cane Garden Bay beach or Long Bay Beef when the cruise ships are in. It represents everything they want to get away from.

But how much money do they spend here compared to those who stay for a week?

To all districts, clean and beautify your district. Market directly to the tourist and develop your product. The government is not capable of creating unique tourism products for districts.

Actually is that what we really want, thousands and thousands of visitors?
And what do you think will happen to the beautiful Virgin Islands with all of these thousands of people here?
It will become the next Costa Brava. The real money spenders won’t want to come here anymore. Too busy, you have to queue to get through at the Baths.
The numbers should be balanced to take into consideration of impact to the environment.
Airport expansion, Nanny Cay expansion, why isn’t there a limit on number of charter yacht’s allowed in the BVI?

Restart working on the legal cannabis. Right now you could be estimating how much we are losing. Especially considering this number is largely cruise visitors and they can not take it back on the boat. Over nights will only increase.

Buy, eat/drink/smoke spend, relax, back on the ship.

If 6 visitors means we are on track, 24 what would we call that?

Do the Government ministers not see the potholes, scrap cars, the empty or crumbling buildings and the trash? I walk past the concrete rubble where the Palm Grove Shopping Centre used to be by the traffic lights every day and have to laugh because the gardeners still cut the plants and the grass - its like lipstick on a pig.
