'We need that cancer registry'- BVICS President
News of a cancer registry for the Virgin Islands (VI) first made waves in 2013 when then CEO of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) Darlene Carty-Baptiste, as part of a wider cancer prevention programme being examined by the BVIHSA, said the authority was looking into screening services and capabilities, and the potential development of a tumor registry or cancer registry.
Registry needed now
While the promise of a cancer registry came over a decade ago, Fahie said in an interview with JTV Channel 55 on October 5, 2024, during the CIBC Annual Run/Walk for a Cure, that the registry is needed now more than ever.
“We have a lot of persons out there coming down and being diagnosed weekly, daily with cancer and it’s not looking good. BVI government we need that cancer registry, what’s taking you all so long?” she asked.
The surge in cancer cases in the VI is not good, she added.
Gov’t support needed
On another disappointing note for Fahie was the lack of physical support shown to the walk by members of the government.
“I have not seen one member of the government here this morning and it’s not nice, they should be here supporting,” she lamented.
The support of the government to the BVI Cancer Society and its cause is needed, she said.
Governor Pruce was present
While he did not initially go out on his early morning walk to be a part of the Cancer Society’s event, Governor Daniel Pruce met the over four hundred supporters of Saturday’s Walk and decided to join them.
Governor Pruce called the walk a wonderful event stating, “It’s fantastic here early on a Saturday morning to see so many people coming together having a great time and raising money for such a great cause as well.”
The Governor also pledged his support for the society, adding that he is willing to do his part to assist.

There are countries that do significant research and are able to help with advanccement with the disease, but BVI is a waste in everything they touch.
