FAHIE HILL, Tortola, VI- Independent At Large Candidate and businessman Lesmore Smith has said there is a need for persons with experience and the ability to make sensible decisions for the territory sitting in the next House of Assembly (HoA).

“Only people with experience that can understand and have the know-how that can be able to challenge those situations and help to make decisions that going to make it better for all of us,” Mr Smith stated during his first public meeting at the Watch House on Fahie Hill, Tortola on March 17, 2023.

Mr Smith, the current President of the VI Horse Owners Association, expressed confidence in himself, based on his track record, experience and expertise, to do an effective job as an At Large Representative if elected.

“It’s about time we put people with skill sets in positions that can manage the job that we are asking them to do. We need to stop friend-friend, family-friend, and all those people in places. We need to put people in place that are capable of handling the call, taking the challenge head on and making a difference.”

Indeed, the BVI is facing a myriad of challenges and needs people with demonstrated experience in public affairs, policies, procedures and processes development and execution, proven ability to solve public policy issues to address the challenges. Many candidates are leaning on their business experience as the panacea for solving the BVI ills. Well, government cannot be operated solely as a business. True, some business practices can be employed in government. Business and government have different missions, though. Business is about making a profit and can choose what customers they want to serve and can shutter its doors when it is not meeting its profit margin. On the other hand, government has to meet the needs of all constituents and cannot choose what constituents it wants to serve. Running government requires special skills and experiences to deliver efficient and effective services services to all constituents. Moreover, the political structure, ie, political parties, etc, have failed miserably to deliver a deep and sustainable reservoir/pool of talent to run government on a continuous basis. If the political machine was running smoothly and effectively HoA should comprise a generational mix of members. Presently, there is dearth of qualified people to smoothly take the leadership baton, continuing the running of government without gaps in government operations.

Let me warn all those who think politics is a football. If you know you are just joining the bandwagon for a show please step aside.
You are hampering the territory. Every body running and no body wants to walk behind authority. Time to take some introspection and ask your self what am I running for and why am I really running. Stop letting people full up your heads with folly and using you then they will refuse you. Ask your self is it to get even with someone.
Take warning do not go to be nominated on April 13 for you will be messing with the true outcome of politics on April 24. 2023

The territory is at a crucial and critical stage don't play chess with it. Then you realize you should not have run think about it seriously and do what is right. It's your democratic right but dont enter the race to get even or for fame. The ballot will have 100 people on it pure confusion.

You are all missing the point. The man is saying we need more bvi belongers with experience.
Bringing knowledge, and expertise in departments would go a long way and not jobs for the boys.
You see the bigger picture sir!
This is how we move ahead, new crew with the peoples interests at heart.

Obviously you have no idea how some businessmen in the BVI been collecting from the government with ministers as their shareholders in business while other businesses look like jack @$$ applying for contracts

Lesmore is a good man. He is a man of 2nd chances. When the TB woman went to prison and was released years later, he picked her up and gave her a job when no one else would. I would vote for him

"We need to stop friend-friend, family-friend..." However, "When blood calls, blood must answer." Make up your mind which it is. And what is your experience in the House of Assembly. Did you get the contract to provide security? For Heaven's sake.
