We need a Governor who doesn't go away 'in midst of emancipation celebration'-Rev Turnbull

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- United Kingdom appointed Governor of the [British] Virgin Islands His Excellency Daniel Pruce's absence during this year's 70th Emancipation Festival may be an act of God paving the way for a son of the soil, Acting Governor Mr David D. Archer Jr, to hold the post during this significant period.

This was suggested by new co-chair of the Virgin Islands Heritage Month Committee and Senior Pastor of Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church, Pastor Dr Michael A. Turnbull, who could not contain his gratefulness that Acting Governor Archer Jr was the one in the Governor's Office during the Emancipation Festival.

Pastor Turnbull’s comments came during the Emancipation Service on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the Sunday Morning Well.

Absent from the territory since July 20, 2024, Governor Pruce has missed his first Emancipation Festival as Governor of the Territory. In his absence, Deputy Governor David D. Archer Jr has been acting in the Office of Governor, a role he will hold until August 10, 2024, when Governor Pruce returns.

No UK-appointed Governor for Emancipation Festival

This is not the first time the [British] Virgin Islands has been without a Governor on home soil during Emancipation celebrations in recent years. Last year, 2023, then Governor John J. Rankin missed what would have been his last Emancipation Festival as Governor of the [British] Virgin Islands.

Celebrations are set to end on August 10, 2024.

Though not present, Governor Pruce did send best wishes in a message on July 30, 2024, to the people of the Territory ahead of Emancipation Day.

In his message, he paid tribute to the festival’s organisers and wished everyone a “joyful and safe celebration”.

Someone who 'looks like us'- Pastor Turnbull

Pastor Turnbull said he was grateful that a “son of the soil” is acting in the capacity of Governor.

“I don’t call it by chance that someone that looks like us, belongs to us, is here at this time and it’s special for us to be here,” Pastor Turnbull added.

He continued that 190 years ago the proclamation was read at various sites across the territory and this is the first time that someone who’s a native Virgin Islander “has the opportunity to recite one of the versions of the proclamation”.

Pastor Turnbull said it should not be taken for granted that Acting Governor Archer Jr is the one in the Governor’s Office during Emancipation celebrations.

“We have to continue celebrating our own people that look like us, that we can touch and who doesn't go away in the midst of our emancipation celebration,” Pastor Turnbull said.

Ah yu still don’t understand that the UK-appointed governor who is supposed to represent the (British ) Virgin Islands (VI) and its people is in name only. There are in territory to represent the crown/UK, not the VI people ; colonialism is alive and well. Whether, it is Jaspert, Cruikshank, Duncan, Rankin, Pruce,,etc they don’t give a rat’s ass about the VI people and their emancipation celebration. What did Controversial Jasper throw in your faces about reparation, historical landmark naming. When are going to believe when someone tell you who they are and what they going to do believe them. Keep on believing Mount Olympus got you back; you better check your back for daggers.

What nonsense. When government offices are closed it is the ideal time for him to take his personal annual leave.

Despite what we like to believe or think the UK doesn't respect us as people only as their subjects under their control and power.

Yet, the U.K. wants us front and center for their Queen and king celebrations. I wouldn't go to any of them to show the same disrespect they show us.

I don't care if he goes away during the celebration. The celebration is for us anyway. I understand the sentiment and that it looks better when they stay and participate in parade etc but most european expats leave during that time. They have families and lives outside of the BVI and we get 3 work days off. I wouldn't make a mountain out of a mole hill. It just makes sense to get a trip in at that time. We can't be outraged about everything, somethings are just like a fart in the wind.

    Mehson, leh he go!

If I'm not mistaken, the racial riots taking place in the Kingdom right now, is an incentive for any of those Blokes, to go back home!

What now, can he tell us about, " the good rule of law", when his own people right now, are actually killing "coloreds", in an effort to "save" the Kingdom?

Let us not take the need of the COI, casually; these people are here to destroy our country, in the needing for the "saving", of the Kingdom!

    Mehson, leh he go!

That's the best time for him to take some of his annual leave.

He doesn't need to be here when most of government offices are on holiday or go-slow for Emancipation Week.

And, besides, it's not his culture. We shouldn't hold that against him.

The governor is entitled to his choice. For you to insinuate that he must be here during this celebration is bullying.

Seventy years ago my mother brought with her at the Sunday Morning Well Emancipation Celebration. It was ok except that I was hungry, and refused the food she had offered me because I want no one to see me ate food out doors from home. I was a little child then

Pastor David Turnbull, you are a grown man physically, but spiritually you are as immature as a child in the year 2024.

With the high percentage of negative and unethical distasteful behavior of the BVI Emancipation Celebration ongoing yearly, and getting worse, why do you chose to attack governor Daniel Pruce? Do you want him to fit in the mold of sexism as many of the BVI pastors and many others person currently doing, fake pastor?

It’s not just the governor who goes away, I can name dozens of locals who also utilise the public holiday to take some rest or go on vacation. There is nothing cultural about festival any more, it’s all about loud music, late nights and drinking. So can you blame anyone for not taking part if that’s not their thing? Boy I wish these government officials would stop being so petty and ignorant, if we go independent we are doomed.

It’s sad when we feel we must create negativity in order to pull the audience. If our Governor was here, they would have found something negative to say about that. We must change our mentality to one of preaching love, unity and kindness. Stop feeding into hatred.

The Governor did not go away. He simply went to change into his falsies and lingerie. He was right there with
the best of the girls in the parade. Tally Ho!
