ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Junior Minister of Culture and Tourism, Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4) has called a huge success, the recent trip to Monaco led by Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) where a local delegation was able to attend the Monaco Yacht Show.

Following questions from the media during a press conference on October 6, 2023, Hon Hodge-Smith; however, had to defend the need for the trip as one that was necessary to sell the VI as a tourism product.

Opportunities for those present

“We were able to interact with persons...and no you cannot interact with people on Zoom, you have to be present. And the fact of the matter is we didn't necessarily say other things that happened because there were other opportunities while we were there,” she said.

While some members of the public and even the press have accused the delegation of traveling for fun, talk, and cocktails with nothing in return, Hon Hodge-Smith said that was not the case as the event was also a networking opportunity.

“We didn't share the story at the reception as you said that we are just there for cocktails, right? We were able to meet the owner of the IGY Marinas by accident. Do you meet that person on Zoom, or you have to be present to meet? And while we were there, we were able to have a meeting and a discussion on how we can do business going forward. Because he introduced us to someone else in his organisation.”

Hodge-Smith said that what it means to be present, is to have the opportunity to further advancements in getting things done for the territory.

VI has to aggressively sell tourism product - Hon Hodge-Smith

“We are in a global community. We cannot act in silo. Nothing comes to us. We have to go and aggressively sell our product and if it means traveling across the world to do it, we need to do it because we believe in our product,” she added,

Hon Hodge-Smith said the VI has something that's sellable and they are confident that with the new changes that are happening with the local shipping registry growth will come.

“When you go around negotiation tables, nothing happens at the same time, it takes time for growth and we will see results because we believe in our product, the product has proven itself and we just need to go the extra mile to get it done,” she said.

I agree to do what needs to be done but please get your government to fix the economy. The people are hurting. Businesses are hurting.

It is okay to aggressively sell BVI tourism. It would be better if you aggressively fixed the BVI tourism product (roads, sewer, water, transportation, etc) at the same time. You can't have a 5 star experience if you can't take a shower during your vacation!

To be fair to the government this trip was necessary and will result in assisting in a vibrant and strong shipping registry industry almost to level of financial services once the government plays its card correct. Tourism will also benefit. The issue is the government does poor public relations so they allow proganda to always get ahead of intended prosperity.

Yes, makes sense. BUT, in addition to fixing the product (roadsides littered with wrecked cars, boats, and lack of dependable water and electricity, to name a few) it is also necessary to AGGRESSIVELY deal with the growing Crime situation (and gun crime) here! It ruins quality of life for those of us who live here, and will have a tremendous dampening effect on travel here. Just ask St. Croix!

campaigns usually fail. BVI ship registry is incompetent when compared to all the successful ship registries in Gibraltar, Bermuda, Cayman, Singapore etc.

What Government isn't saying is they don't know the money to fix the infrastructure. No loan guarantee so no funds to build, replace and repair. That is why they need to market the Territory to the rich and famous. It may seem like the cart before the horse, but you can't fix the place if you don't have the money.

You don't go to market until you have a product to sell. Fix the product before wasting our money taking it to market.

What is the Tourism “product”? it used to be beautiful waters, unspoiled natural beaches, snorkeling, diving, world class sailing and yacht chartering with high end service…

Hon Luce Hodge-Smith, yes, tourism needs to be strengthened, deepened and diversified. Tourism is 1/2 of the BVI ‘s economic twin pillars; financial services, other. Financial services provides over 60% of government revenue , but tourism provides more direct, indirect and induced employment. The VI must ride or die with tourism. It lacks the natural resources to establish a sustainable primary or secondary economy. Therefore, it must embraced services.

Moreover, tourism has to be more than sand, sea and sun , and old talk. It requires proactive actions. Talk is cheap money buy land dem say. Our competitors in the region also have sand, sea and sun. Therefore, if we want to be a top competitor, we must differentiate ourself. As such, to differentiate ourself and provide a competitive tourism product, there are some things we must do. a), we must improve our healthcare system,
    b) our education system must move full STEAM ahead. c), we must invest in and build a First World physical Infrastructure system, viz, water, wastewater, stormwater(drainage), electricity, road network, gas, ports ( sea and air) and telecommunications systems. d), the rule of law must be practice and employed fairly, not used on a selected , targeted few. e), rising violent and property crime must be arrested, f), the economy must be diversified so that if one sector stumbles the whole system does not tumble, g) increase, and improve current attractions ( the old HMP is an embarrassment, upgrade it or close it), h, arrest the skyrocketing cost of living, I) functional social safety nets., etc. Further, explore constructing a board walk along the shoreline in Road Town, develop a SEA( sea, entertainment and art) district in Road Town. Disclaimer: the SEA is not mine. Another blogger suggested it sometime ago.

@ Majack, good read but you forget about solid waste. The open burning is killing we in the West and even when the incinerator was “puttering” along the hazardous emissions killing we. Anyone knows what the maximum permissible exposure limits (PEL) are for incinerators? Whatever, the suggested max PEL they are busting by several orders of magnitude. Poor we in the West; we are only pretend important during election time. Someone of the bloggers suggested putting people in the West on a monitoring programme. Did that fall on deaf ears?

How about starting with something as simple as making the BVI immigration form electronic? Or even ensuring that the physical forms are available for arriving passengers. Its so not fund having to wait in that hot arrivals terminal, simply because no immigratiom forms are available. How embarrassing!! We are so far behind the majority of other caribbean Islands.

      @Sigh,
Love it! Recently travel to NYC from London was surprise at how available all the forms was online to fill. Got my stamp and move on to clear my bag. There was no questions. So, agreed 1000% that this should be done ten years ago. When BVI people travel, they will see how far behind this country really is, and catching up means all hands on deck, whether it be expats or native it requires everyone living in BVI to give their best to the country. It can become a little bit more like Singapore, Monaco, Italy, France, a bit of luxury in BVI.

And, please Mr Government try and fix that airport, cannot continue to have an international airport with no international flight. I am hungry to live the life here in BVI that I see when I travel. I want to experience,an Amazon package delivered to me in next day time, or fresh flowers for my table from the Netherlands.Fix that airport please!

How about making it EASY to find and read the darn Ferry Schedules. It’s like you want to make it difficult for people to get here. And how about making a later ferry? So people don’t have to sweat whether they’ll make it to their BVI destination on time, and not get stuck in a VI hotel overnight?!

A large percentage of tourism revenue is extracted and doesn’t circulate in the territory so what’s the point? Either make the tourism product more locally owned or continue to be a slave to tourism.

Honourable Smith, I wish you well in your new job, and I don't want you to catch the do-nothing disease that seems to be plaguing others. As the new Representative of our Capital, it is important to think outside the box. Drive around your District, as someone who travels and has lived abroad, and try to come up with ideas as to how to make life better for persons who are descending on your District daily for work. First order of business though is to, please, try to clean up areas that are in need of sprucing up. Invite the Director of Public Works on a drive through and see where that partially defunct Department can assist in cleaning up our Capital. They have the trucks, the heavy equipment and the manpower. I am sure they can clean drains, sweep dust off the roadways, plant a few flowers and liaising with other Departments, clean up derelict vehicles etc. That is a good place to start. Travelling and selling the BVI is important, yes, but it is important to see what you are doing in and for your District on the ground, at home as well.
