BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The Government of the Virgin Islands led by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has committed to extending the runway at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport; however, how it will be done is not a decision written in stone as yet.

“I don’t think we have reached to the point where we are deciding what will be extended,” said the man tasked with getting the project done, Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) disclosed while a guest on Talking Points on ZBVI 780 AM on Monday, June 17, 2024.

No decision yet- Hon Rymer

Hon Rymer said KPMG is currently putting together the business case “so that we can decide on what we are extending.”

The Works Minister said the business case will be brought to Cabinet for approval.

“I know we have looked at extending 500 feet to the west and extending more to the east, but we haven’t decided as yet. KMPG will come to the public as to what the decision is and hear input as to the way forward,” Hon Rymer stated.

‘Start with lil bit’- Mark H. Vanterpool

Former Minister for Communications and Works Mark H. Vanterpool advised the Wheatley Government in December 2023 to undertake the airport project in strides.

“I want the airport fixed, extend it, I want some more people to come. I tell the premier tonight, don’t be getting into this big project like I did before with other projects, start with lil bit.”

Mr Vanterpool added “American [Airlines] says they want more space to turn off, add a piece to the back. Put on a little piece to the back about 500 ft, don’t wait for the other one yet. By the time you get through with that you will get through with the other piece. So, by next year, let me see the other 500 ft to the back please,” Mr Vanterpool stated at the launch of Rock Café by Pussers in Valley, Virgin Gorda on December 12, 2023.

Only the Chinese can pull this off with good quality and reliable work..We are waay behind because we refused the Chinese offer in 2011 - 2012. Nothing happen since...The Chinese did it in Bahamas, some of Africa's nicest airports done by The Chinese, look at how Jamaica look so good with multiple projects by the Chinese...America is just a bully that talks, offers no real help..

Please educate yourself as to what the Chinese want in return for helping these nations, remember that those you mentioned are independent countries, the BVI is subjected to some extent to the rules and regulations of the UK.

Why not start by making the place more desirable first. Who wants to fly here to get in a taxi to drive on these roads and see junk and mess from one end of the island to the other. Maybe we are used to seeing it but the tourists dhttps://www.virginislandsnewsonline.com/en/news/we-have-looked-extending-airport-runway-500-ft-to-the-west-hon-rymeront miss it.

We will lose the reason people want to come here in the first place. You can't build a road ... you want to build an airport expansion? Third world water , no sewage treatment, poor education, and rising crime by the day . And the morons in suits want to spend our money on blacktop to bring in people we have no room for . SMFH

Yall are putting the cart before the horse. You HAVE to get proper infrastructure IN PLACE FIRST! SEWAGE and ROADS.

If y'all and your gang would stop being greedy and bad minded this can be done properly, professionally in short order without affecting the govt pocketbook. You all can take the credit after it's done no problem at all!
Y'all have no vision so you will never see how easy it is to make shit happen in this country.

We have the worst airport in the world.

    No departure or arrival information.
    Rude and drunk taxi drivers
Unpleasant immigration workers (they can be friendly when doing their job)
    Unreliable service schedules
Too few and unhappy fire crews.

First we obviously need to have a decent airport prior to extending it.

But the ministers and cronies probably can’t make enough money by making slight improvements. They need a big projects to take big money from.

I responded to the survey questions. It is not a valid survey. Multiple choice answers are skewed to artificially validate data such that it will appear to support airport expansion. If this survey is an indicator, the decision has already been to expand the airport. "Data" from this so-called survey will appear to support such a decision but, in reality, it's bologna. A truly objective survey might be helpful if decision makers are actually interested in prudent decision-making on behalf of the people.

I agree. The choice of answers were not valid for the questions asked.

Why can't he also work with St. Thomas customs and immigration for a ferry service between Road Town and St. Thomas airport? It was discussed with St. Thomas years ago. So either they did not follow up, or they have not bothered to tell us how it all went.

Even if we get our airport extension, regular folks will be OK with the extra steps through St. Thomas so we can get cheaper prices.

500ft is a joke. It will not accommodate ANY OTHER AIRCRAFTS to what we get now. Why wasting money for such nonsense again

Wake Up people who really leaves from Tortola that the government keeps using tax payers money for crap. Where's the school. You all need to boycott carnival and everything else the government receive money for because they don't put it for good use. The kids matters. What happened to the after school program? Why are the kids graduating and working for 6.00 a hour? People defend the kids and their future it's unfair that the government is leading your children down to temptation. Everything cost money what they want they will do anything for. Make the government raise minimum wage. Stop going to government funding events. This is why they do what they do because you lay down and take IT

Is there room to the west to extend without impacting traffic flow. If so, the road would have to redesign and reconstructed closer to the sea..

They say the way thieves don’t get caught when they take small amounts each time. How convenient that not costs are given for the “little piece”. Secondly, there has not been a single capital project in the BVIs that has been completed within budget and on time. Thirdly, we don’t have the money without borrowing it. With the BVIs fiscal record, interest rates won’t be cheap, and the terms won’t be generous. KPMG will make a case because they know the govt wants this and because they’ll want to be paid for their work. It’ll still be a stupid idea.

Everyone has the right to their own opinion, but everyone's opinion is not wise. At a time as this where we are, economically speaking, in a money crunch, or better said, lack of money to deal with the many infrastructural needs namely sewage, roads damaged, some of our citizens without jobs, underpaid minimum wage collectors, pressing food high prices, some medical staff underpaid, wasteful money been already spent on overseas travel, wars uncertainty, etc., etc., etc., I honestly don't think it is wise idea at this time to even talk about lengthening our Airport at this time, especially when our political leadership led by Natalio Sujande Wheatley, a stubborn head man, shows little respect for those that he and the other leaders beg for a job from us as their employees. Furthermore, this Topic Issue was discussed approximately 12 years ago at Francis Lettsome's public Center, no Champagne after that.
Although it is in our best interest that Terence B. Lettsome's Airport be extended sometime in the future, but should now be headed by this administration that is now in power, no, no, no, no, a million times no.

What is the strategic plan AFTER you extend the runway? Ask you all keep talking about is extending the runway! For what? What is the objective with no rooms for people to stay in. With horrible roads and garbage and sewerage every where?

Whatever you do please don't give it to locals. The money will done and it won't finish just like admin building, DDM building and others. Give it to the Chinese and avoid all the stress and worries, of course locals must get employment. But it will be a Chinese project.

The Chinese has a simple fool proof strategy.
They finance the project because they know you can not repay and they will end up with the asset.
Just like they did in Antigua, Dominica to name a few the islands.
If you think BVI is immune try it with them.

Just replicate the runway extension like Maho Beach in St. Marten with the planes flying low to land on the runway extension. It will be a new tourist attraction for the BVI!

All the dumb people who comment about China are selfish. Do you think it's right that a woman in China can't have as many kids as the Almighty Father allow them to have ? Why does the government call the shots there? The government has us trapped here you can't leave without a passport or permission. How is this right. They have full control over us do you not question that. I just can't fathom how brainwash everyone is. No one ask questions which I understand I was raised the same way. In this devil run earth ask questions and alot of questions

These governments come in and tell us the airport is being extended, every time, with no debate or explanation.
None of them come in and make a case for extending the airport. They don't come and tell us what the vision is. Why the airport needs to be extended. What the benefit of extending it is to the BVI people. How the BVI will accommodate the increased arrivals and what that BVI will now look like. Will we switch from a nature-based high quality tourism product to a mass tourism junkyard with hotels everywhere and beaches crowded with umbrellas and rental chairs like CGB? Is this the vision? If so, why don't you ask the people what they think? If so, why don't you factor in the other factors such as the impact on local living standards, the impact on road and sewage other infrastructure and the impact on the environment and eco systems you want to destroy so you and a few of your friends can make a lot of money, while a number of Caribbean and Asian immigrants make a living wage and the BVIslanders get almost nothing at all. A dead and ugly set of islands is all we will be left with when the dollar falls to nothing and the US economy is underwater. Meanwhile, the politicians and their cronies will have hidden their winnings away in some offshore bank account, rich for generations. We see you.
