BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- As residents continue to complain about the state of the roads, which have been made worse by the recent floodings, Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) said the plan is to do some interim repair work until major works can be done once the required funding is received.

The interim works, which are being done thanks to a contingency warrant signed by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) for $1.8 million, include patching of the many potholes.

“We need to do more proper drainage for the roadways...We have all those plans [but] we just waiting on the funds,” Hon Rymer stated in referring to the $100m loan Premier Wheatley has been seeking for the territory.

Current road works

“You would notice too, in the past week or so, we have been trying to patch as much potholes as possible. Our asphalt plant is up and working. We have hired some private trucks as well to do some patching,” Hon Rymer stated while a guest of Talking Points on ZBVI 780 AM on Monday, June 17, 2024.

The Works Minister added that some of the current works include cutting out sections of the roads to have them resurfaced using the proper machinery.

“In the absence of getting the major works done, we have been trying our best to make the roads as best as possible.

“I know it’s very tough. The roads are in horrible condition, but we are working tirelessly to get them as comfortably as possible,” Hon Rymer stated.

Remember. Doing good. Clean it out properly, fill the hole with concrete to a inch below surface, then top it off to level with pressed asphalt while the concrete is semi dry so it can create a bond with the concrete, That my friend will stand up under weight and water...

Talking about patch pot hole that is not the right way to patch pothole the right is you put some one inch stone in the hole first befor you put Ashfield and you wil see the differences put that alone as soon as rain fall it became a mess you don't have to agree with me

Hon. Minister, Kye Rhymer, Deputy Premier of the B.V.I, I do believe that you have it in your mind to patch more well-holes in our traffic road, but with millions of our limited tax dollars been waisted and being wasted on Music Fest and unproductive trips oversees, not to mention sports events and others suspicious matters, how then will you be able to convince us, the people, that your best efforts should be accepted by us as truthful?
I know as you and others do that tough times and negative happening affect peoples lives worldwide, but does our Premier knows and does he really cares? I doubt that he does. If he really did care about patching the many potholes, water-holes and cracked public traffic roads that you have mentioned, he would have already considered of cost in US$ been and being wasted on unnecessary overseas travel, etc. Bear in mind that overseas travel is necessary only when its serve the fundamental needs of all the living people of the British Virgin Islands, including you, me and visitors, too.

You moron it's just about patching the holes! The roads need to be re engineered because throwing asphalt over it and calling it a day is not working. It washes over after a few showers

Outsource and bring some real road engineers to fix the place properly!

Another problem we have is the mixer trucks dumping cement on the streets causing the roads to get bad. When it’s not that the trucks are pulling on the sides of the road and washing out the trucks. The drivers are allowed to dump waste all over the island with out any resistance. I had to curse one of them for trying to wash out a truck on the street next to the Francis Lettsome Primary. The drivers won’t even use the excess to fill a pot hole but they are happy destroying the roads.

To add to your comments, in terms of road wear and tear, a loaded cement truck is equivalent to 1,800 vehicles. A loaded dump truck, is about the same. Existing roads were not designed for these kinds of loads on a regular basis. Patches will be just that …patches. They won’t last.

I don't think we should complain if they patch the potholes, we should be grateful but they need to also have a real fix for the roads. We need a temp fix and a permanent solution so we won't need more temp fixes

Until the people in their Districts give a hoot about their portfolio and what they do about it, we will never get results from these young people. They are not afraid of being voted out, so they do what they want, how they want. Until there are consequences for actions with these young people, we are never going to get the best out of them. They just have to smile with their constituents and sing songs and cater to their individual needs while the fact that they are responsible for the entire Territory under a hugh portfolio be damned. The way I see it, the only thing we can do is pray. God answers prayers. And the UK riding in on their big white horses is not my prayer nor should it be others. What we break, we have to fix. Your votes count. Stop voting foolishly. When someone shows you who and what they are, believe them.
