ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has reported that the Virgin Islands’ delegation had a successful trip to the United Kingdom (UK), where the main event was the Joint Ministerial Council (JMC) Meeting held from November 21-22, 2024.

The JMC brings together elected leaders and representatives from all of the Overseas Territories (Ots), as well as UK Ministers and provides the principal forum for political dialogue and consultation between the UK and the OTs.

“We had our second day at the JMC, it went very well. JMC was very successful. So we are pleased with the trip. We were able to accomplish our goals and we had some real successes,” Premier Wheatley told Acting Director of Communications Karia J. Christopher in an interview on Friday, November 22, 2024, in London.

UK ‘did a good job of listening’- Premier

Dr Wheatley said the UK Overseas Territories Minister Stephen J. Doughty, MP and his team did a good job of listening and being “conciliatory, seeking common grounds, didn’t necessarily want to force things down your throat and they were very clear about what their positions were. We were clear about what our positions were, but there was an effort to meet in the meadow, and that was very apparent.”

The Premier said the UK also made it very clear they could not make promises they couldn’t keep, so the Ots didn’t expect to just hear things “to please you but I think they made an effort to be realistic, to be reasonable, to be measured and to be conciliatory.”

Dr Wheatley is scheduled to further update the territory on the VI’s experience in the UK “and other current matters” at a live press conference scheduled for 9:00 AM on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.

Premier seems to be esaliry fooled these UK politicians and diplomats will always say the right words to make you feel good but their actions tell another story. The fcdo has the vibes of a flock of vultures waiting in the wings for their chance to feed.

From a freedom fighter and African name change to this weakness cmon man. IDK one minute your say decolonize and the next its another version of the animal farm. Listening and speaking does not equal action or affection. Let their actions speak to the success. The cause you championed is stalled so what really are they listening to?

Territories of the UK have no position they have only hope and ideals. We need to stop living a fantasy and deal with our actuality. The UK restricts our existence so why would they allow self-determination? They can give us that power at any time. They will never allow self-determination until they can't keep it from us. We keep their educational system which indoctrinate our children to be the biggest opposers of self-determination. If we believe in ourselves self -determination is the way if we believe in them integration is the way to go.
