ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Talk show host Mr Cromwell Smith aka Edju En Ka is of the opinion the Virgin Islands does not want to sever its relationship with the United Kingdom (UK).

Mr Smith was speaking on the UMOJA programme on ZBVI 780 AM on Thursday, November 28, 2024, when the topic of the programme was ‘The March Continues’.

The VI celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Great March of 1949 on Sunday, November 24, 2024, with a march through Road Town, beginning from the Road Town Bandstand and proceeding to Sir Olva Georges Plaza, along Main Street.

“We talk about our relationship with the United Kingdom and when we talk about that relationship, when you hear ourselves talk to each other about that relationship, it occurs to me that we don’t want that relationship to be severed,” Mr Smith stated.

He added that he does not hear from Virgin Islanders a desire to take advantage of global opportunities, which can benefit the Territory. This includes the potential for new trading partners and relationships that can lead to advancements.

“Are there benefits for us to receive from other countries other than the United Kingdom?” Mr Smith asked.

‘We don’t want to be independent’- Mr Smith

Continuing on his train of thought, Mr Smith said, “I have sensed that we don’t to be independent. We want some sort of self-governance but you know when you talk about independence some red flags go up in all our minds and we afraid.”

He stated there is always an excuse when talks of independence arise.

“I have been hearing that phrase ‘We are not ready yet’ for the last twenty years. When we talk about becoming an independent country and making our own decisions, somebody or some group or most of us say ‘Yes in the future’…when [is] the future going to reach here?”

‘We have to prepare’- Shaina M. Smith-Archer

Meanwhile, Co-host Shaina M. Smith-Archer agreed with Mr Smith. “We have to prepare, we don’t become ready just like that…If we’re saying this is something for us in the future, we have to say though ‘How are we preparing ourselves now for it in the future?’”

Mr Cromwell Smith added, “What does that preparation look like? Where does it come from? What does it look like?”

Any person with half of brain functionality living here in these islands knows that we cannot go independent and we cannot afford to sever ties with the UK. Do you guys drink some kinda of potion before you speak, where it erases your realty, simple example; the roads you drove on to get to the venue of this radio station to have this conversation? No wonder this beautiful territory has become a place classified as 3rd world. I cry for my BVI

Is Cromwell talking about Real Independence or Perceived Independence? I am not hearing from the people who is barking about severance from UK and become an Independent nation, ever speak of the elements towards becoming independent like National Defence and Self Determination. The Virgin Islands are lacking everything that an Independent nation must be able to do. I will name two important elements. 1. We can't feed ourselves ( does not have sustainable food supply). 2. We can't defend ourselves.. The Virgin Islands depend on two economic pillars. Tourism and Financial Services both very fickle. No Agriculture, or Manufacturing. Virgin Islands don't make anything, so we have no exports we import everything. I will use a very simple anecdote that an adult who can't efficiently execute their own Self Care, is a Dependent Adult. So the Virgin Islands might be mature but is not efficiently capable of Self Care. So stop beating a dead horse about severence from Uk, self governance, self determination or Independence. Go ahead sever ties from UK and the Financial Services will collapse. Financial Services are strong because the Virgin Isands are under the umbrella of the United Kingdom. Yes, I will sit back and wait for the backñash.

Mr. Cromwell Smith, you and hopefully the majority of the citizens of the BVI know full well know that the people of BVI is unable to sever ties from the UK anytime soon, even if the UK was ready to devoice itself from us
Our mediocre political managerial experience, our disunity among ourselves, our greedy mindset against each others, our lack of self assertive, variant at best, to lead progressively at present, let alone to set a good example for the future generations to come, clearly gave proof that you spoked your desire, but yours and the majority of our actions contract our words. Our people are sadly divided, you included on this Topic Issue. The truth is known worldwide that our political Leaders has already sold our birthright to the highest bidder fir money and prestige. Stop pretending.

What's annoying is for seventy-plus years, we have been claiming that we're not ready. In the animal kingdom, ready or not, after a time you have to go out on your own. There are other options, but we prefer a custodial one with the UK as the parent and we as the child.

People usually fight for freedom and sovereignty, but we prefer the "willing colonizer and the willing colonized." relationship. Our existence is controlled by the UK's whim, and we're ok with it.

Let me have your name and address so that I can come and steal your house car money kids and every thing that I can use to enrich myself and then ask what are you prepared to offer for my property. See how foolish that sounds. The first thing that needs to happen in the Virgin Islands is the breaking of the last bonds of slavery. This is all about a vision and a "Yes We Can" spirit and attitude. It begins in our schools our children must graduate with focus and sense of purpose. Ask people from St. Kitts and Antigua and the other independent countries how it came about....it was a journey and a mission. Only a very few in the Virgin Islands can vibe on that level but the crab in the barrel mentality and cowardice keeps us in check. It is going to be very hard if ever possible to achieve the level of consciousness that is needed to rise to the task. I am reminded of Shakespeare's..."there is a tide in the affairs of men which taken at the flood leads on to fortune.... omitted all the voyage of their lives is bound in shallows and miseries...on such a full sea are we now afloat and we must take the current while it serves us or lose our venture." Time waits for no man.

Check them all out one by one, none of them renounced their americam citizenship for nobody but we must give up our UK because a set of sticky hand people can't get to spin the money and power how they wanna

The majority of Virgin Islanders [British ] only talk casually about independence but don’t want independence at this juncture..Virgin Islanders seem to suffer from the Stockholm Syndrome . Here is a definition of the Stockholm Syndrome: “ Stockholm Syndrome" refers to a psychological phenomenon where a victim develops a positive emotional bond with their captor or abuser, often displaying empathy, loyalty, and even defense towards them, despite the abusive situation they are in; the term originates from a real-life hostage situation in Stockholm, Sweden where hostages showed sympathy towards their captors. Further, Virgin Islanders in regards to independence are behaving like a restless child who wants leave the nest but is scared, lacks the confidence , and don’t want the responsibilities, ie, rent, utilities, insurance, cable , telecommunications, food, transportation, etc. The VI is not the only territory scared of facing independence, ie, USVI,,Puerto Rico, etc. Independence was on the Puerto Rico November 05, 2024 election, along with statehood , and free association. Independence hit a small share of the votes.. Puerto Rico is the oldest colony in history,,ie, 400 years under Spain and over a 100 years under the UK. Puerto Rico was a territory before many of states which were also territories..The unincorporated doctrine was invented to keep Puerto Rico from becoming a state. The typical criterion, ie, the criteria, etc.,,for becoming a state was being an incorporated territory. By the way independence is not the only self-determination choice. There is integration and free association. Free Association is a likely choice. Small countries could maintain their sovereignty for the most part, while signing an agreement with larger country to provide defence for example. There are some examples out there.
