‘We didn’t come here to conquer’ – Paul A. Worrel
“We didn’t come here to conquer anybody or anything,” he told reporters at the opening. The company said it invested, “Let’s call it a substantial hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
“All we are doing is bringing an internationally recognized new standard of operation for business aviation to Tortola and the BVI. We are rather unique,” said Mr Worrel
Mr Worrel was accompanied by one of the owners of IAM Jet Mrs Heather P. Wilshire, Group Manager for Operations Ms Donna Goddard and Mr Thomas Harper of the Business Development Unit among others for a simple cocktail reception and ribbon cutting ceremony.
When the facility was awarded to IAM Caribbean Ltd late last year as opposed to a local outfit, it was expressed that bread was being taken out of the mouth of locals. It was felt that IAM Caribbean Inc and local businesses Airport Services (BVI) Ltd and Platinum had a brokerage partnership and with the agreement of the BVIAA and IAM that partnership will now be broken.
Addressing this concern, Worrel said that for many years they have been sending their clients to private jet operators into the Beef Island Airport. “And in the absence of our own presence we have been using other airport operators to assist with that hence why we became so familiar and comfortable with Tortola.”
He said that now that they are here directly bringing a new and international standard of operation they have made a point, wherever they can, of utilizing additional services from the existing operators on the airport as opposed to bringing their own complete kit of equipment.
“For example out on the ramp the servicing of the aircraft and all of that we are happy to buy that from other vendors on the airport and work in conjunction with them,” Worrel said. He said that they have employed their full complement of six staff from the VI and as they expand they are keen of continuing the same trend.
“It’s only correct that they (tourists/visitors) should have an equally remarkable experience when they come into the airport that’s pretty much what this is about,” asserted Mr Worrel.
Worrel said that they took on the project of establishing the Jet Centre with the full knowledge that there are works afoot to expand the Airport facility in near to medium term future. “It is our hope that at such time as that comes to being that we might have the opportunity to having built on this to transition this into what we can really do…”
