ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- It seemed like a joke gone bad in the House of Assembly (HoA), when the current and former Opposition Leaders Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) and Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) went at each other.

The melee happened on Thursday, April 10, 2025 as legislators debated the highly controversial report entitled ‘A Review of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Bodies in the British Virgin Islands Volume 2 – A Road Map for 2025 to 2035’.

Only locals are corrupt

The report concluded that everyone in the Territory is corrupt except UK nationals and only they can save the Virgin Islands from its so called “corruption”.

However, as usual, the report failed to cite any examples of widespread corruption. The police force, which some alleged is the most corrupt, is under the portfolio of the unelected UK appointed governor. It's last three Commissioners have been persons from the United Kingdom.

During the debate, former Opposition Leader Hon Skelton told the HoA that “we were supposed to be a bird sanctuary...the majority of people were supposed to be moved to Antigua... so, the Leader of the Opposition… probably, we would have all been in Antigua with him.... we would all be neighbours, you know.”

More double standards?

However,  Mr Walwyn who has spent his two years in the  HoA threatening the Speaker, badgering the Premier and at one point threatened to “mash him up,” calling Elected Members 'school children' and throwing words at residents, claimed to be offended with the remarks of Hon Skelton.

Speaker Hon Corine N. George–Massicote demanded that Hon Skelton apologise, and he did. Many saw the Speaker's action as a double standard in light of Hon Walwyn's past behaviour in the Legislature.

There remains growing concerns about a non-indigenous member holding the post of Opposition Leader or even Premier. The Virgin Islands constitution defines an indigenous Virgin Islander as someone having one or both of their parents and grandparents born in the Virgin Islands.

Stop the divisive politics, Premier told Walwyn

Mr Walwyn, a former Chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP), does not fit that criteria, since none of his parents were born in the Virgin Islands; however, he was born in the Territory.

Hon Walwyn once said he could not do anything more to help Virgin Islanders.

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7)- during his wrapup of the debate- warned Hon Walwyn against the divisive politics of pitting indigenous Virgin Islanders against non-indigenous.

According to Dr Wheatley, “We are all one people” and that even the non-indigenous  residents or “those with ancestral ties will fight for the Territory when we make the call....I believe in Unity.”

I don’t think a non indigenous person should hold the post of premier. Why is that even a debate.. it happens no where else in the world so why should it be allowed in the VI? Just pass the law and there will be no confusion .

I agree. That post should be held by an Amerindian, a real indigenous or a Tiano

Indigenous BVIslanders are those who are the descendants of the Africans enslaved in the BVI. You are just another greedy bad minded expat who believes that the BVI is a free for all. Please leave our territory and return home!

Wow, Ronnie is really in his feelings. I didn't expect such a low blow from him. This Indigenous argument with get us nowhere. Do you all think white folks care who is indigenous and who isn't? No wonder the black race is always behind. We are good at creating division among ourselves.

Where have you been? Haven't you heard of white supremacy? The Locals MUST protect what is there's Myron was born here, why was he offended by the statement when the fact is, his parents were NOT born here. Truth is truth! While I can agree to say where you born is where you from, but the fact is we fall under the British Nationality Act and under that changes what it is, is what it is and bearing in mind them would say I'm a half breed because from father and his parents and his grandparents are all Virgin Islanders. We need to stop making excuses and trying to distort the truth from what really is FACT!

Our constitution needs to specify who an Indigenous BVIslander is, and it also needs to provide that only an Indigenous BVIslander can run and hold office. After that is settled, we can move on.

You didn’t read the article AB’s you didn’t watch the HOA clearly. What feelings? I’d UK had turn VI to a bird sanctuary then there would be no VIslander and everybody who from here now would all be from Antigua including Skelton. That is all he said. Myron is the one who got ALL UP in his feelings about he fell offended. He is a darned Antiguan and 1st generation just come BVIslander with no ancestral ties to this place! Fact is facts! Meeno why he keep trying so hard to be a grassroots VI man. Facts is facts!

It can definitelybe assumedthat he is in his feelings. However, I think he meant the comment to be lighthearted, and not malicious. But, he also knows that Myron's status was a grave controversy and he should have stayed away from it because now it makes it look like he was taking jabs.

People need to flood the comments with blogs from natives all around the Caribbean and world saying their country is for them.

Only when they come bvi and find out how easy it is for IMMIGRANTS to do these things they want to silence locals.
    - get crown lands over BVI landers
    - set up business facilitating drinking food and gambling on our preserved wells and beaches
    - push locals out and take government jobs
    - scam locals for land
    - take bvi scholarships
    - cushy up for favors
    - unduly influence elderly to take their land
    - get NHI benefits in the hundred thousands upon landing job on bvi
    - be the meet and greet at our airports and national parks mashing up the Kings English
    - work in restaurants and disgust our tourist by promoting their home country as better than bvi
    - saturate our public schools and say locals should go pay for private schools
    - fly their country flags anywhere

The fact stands. BVI benefits are first and foremost for BVISLANDERS

No LIES detected. The fact is the former government administrations are the reason to blame for this foolishness! The present government and those who seek to be need to speak on these issues. Why are they not saying anything? The labour and immigration policies need to fix now so we could control this madness!

THE BVI IS FOR BVISLANDERS. Some years ago, expats were out in droves commenting foolishness on bvinews website about the BVI being for everyone that comes here to live. This is how they think; they have come to take over and the politicians we vote in are not doing anything about it. We need somebody like Trump to run for office to protect BVIslanders. Someone who will have the courage to speak up and take immediate action and protect the rights of BVIslanders.

While the UK is breathing down our neck and while Trump is getting ready to double the cost of shipping to our region, the biggest concern for some people in our Virgin Islands is who is “Indigenous”. We are a special bunch of people boy…and not in a good way.

BVIslanders are treated like second class citizens in their own country, and it is time this stops. People need to understand that the BVI is for BVIslanders. Many expats act like it is a free for all (and they know this is not the case in their own country) and is trying to grab up everything that we should be entitled to.

Slave mentality? This statement has no relation to the topic at hand. You just using a phrase to sound semi-intelligent; it had the opposite effect.

Only indigenous BVIslanders should be able to run and hold office. Point blank.

Both my parents were born in Tortola and I was born in the US, I have a US birth certificate but I reside in Tortola. When people ask me where I was born and I tell them, the first thing that comes out of their mouth is I am not a BVIslander because I was not born in Tortola..

Myron Walwyn response to Ronnie Skelton reference to the bird sanctuary plan of moving all BVI residents to Antigua was poor performance art, raising a storm in a tea cup. Ronnie did not call down Antigua. The realist was that Antigua was in charge, control the BVI under the Leewards Island Federation which had its head office in Antigua. Is Walwyn ashamed of where his parents were born? He should not be , for he should not be. He is a hypocrite, for attempts to use his expat familial connection as a political tool/weapon to his advantage. Now he is pretending to be offended. The biggest drama q….n, bully, lambaster, attack dog, etc, turning to performative act. Please. Geh me a %$^^$g break mehson. Antigua meh fam cum from fe real and proud of it but Tola me lib now. No problem. Walwyn get a frigging F for his poor performance. I never ever want to hear he talk about he Antiguan or Montserrat connection. Go sid down.
