TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- Caribbean Airlines made its inaugural flight to the Virgin Islands (VI) this morning, October 14, 2024, touching down at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island sometime after 11:00 AM with 62 persons on board.

Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) said the VI being included as part of Caribbean Airlines’ route has been a long time coming as discussions first began in 2019.

“We all knew the intention was that [Caribbean] Airlines was coming and our intention as a government was always to increase intraregional travel,” he stated during the ceremony to welcome the airline to the VI.

Hon Rymer also said with Caribbean Airlines now flying to and from the VI, this can be viewed as a “milestone”, adding he is “proud and excited” to have the airline in the VI.

Currently, Caribbean Airlines will operate four times weekly to and from the VI to Puerto Rico, Antigua and Barbados.

More than an inaugural flight- BVIAA Managing Director

Managing Director of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA), Mr Kurt A.G. Menal said today’s inaugural flight by Caribbean Airlines is much more than that or a new route.

“For us, it’s about partnership, it’s about growing our economy, growing our business, it’s about cultural exchange throughout the Caribbean,” he stated.

Mr Menal also said the issue of intraregional travel is taken seriously and personally by those in the VI since the Territory is located all the way to the North of the "island chain", which makes travelling to the south and vice versa one filled with many connecting flights.

“This partnership today, it builds bridges not just between islands and airports but bridges between families... We see this as the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship as we enhance intraregional connectivity not just into the BVI but throughout the Caribbean,” Menal said.

This is good. You have to stay on them Minister. They all start off good, then they become enemy of the people. Look at Inter Caribbean, we never thought no one could have been worst than Liat..Also look at Winnair the Price they Charge to go Antivua, St. Kitts St. Marten and to come to the BVI you can use that same money or less to go to England or Canada. Shameful greed. No reason for anyone to spend $700 dollars to go to Antigua, St. Kitts, St, Marte.n or to come to the BVI. All neigbbors stone throw away. I would like to hear Winair explanation For those rediculous cost.. Praying for Liat return..

Liat 2020 is in trouble. The airline's majority stakeholder, Allen Onyema, CEO of Nigerian airline Air Peace, faces an expanding array of charges from the United States government, casting a long shadow over the fledgling carrier's future.
Onyema, who holds a 70% stake in LIAT 2020, has been evading trial in an American court for five years. Now, the U.S. government has ratcheted up the pressure, adding fresh allegations to the existing $20 million bank fraud case. On October 8, 2024, a superseding indictment was filed, introducing charges of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice against the embattled Nigerian businessman.

The public is so clueless as to what's taking place with regional air lift. Here we are praising the the BVIAA and the government for nothing really. The market is ripe for this type of operation to take place, they aren't doing anything special to bring additional traffic to BVI. I really hope we'll wake up and see this. The airport/airlift is lacking in so many services but we are blinded by these miniscule things that has nothing to with the territory's input.

The arrival of Caribbean Airline came at an opportune time when the Opposition in the Virgin Islands is bringing a No Confidence motion in the House of Assembly against the government. While the Opposition is fighting for power the government is moving full steam ahead. Where there is no vision, the people perish. I hope ALL the gov3rnment members will unite and embarrass the POWER-HUNGRY opposition.
