ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has called on the people of the [British] Virgin Islands to open their eyes and acknowledge that their freedom is not complete and therefore should work towards complete autonomy.

The Premier in his remarks during the Emancipation Service on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the Sunday Morning Well said, “Under the institution of slavery, we were taught not to say certain things for fear of what could happen to us but a part of the Emancipation process is having the courage to speak freely in your own self-interest and the reality is that our present status is not fully free, we are not fully free people and we must acknowledge that”.

He said it is imperative that the people are courageous and continue working and building upon the foundation and sacrifices made by those who came before.

Threat of suspension of democratic governance 'should be shocking to all'

Premier Wheatley also slammed a recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) that called for a suspension of democratic governance and implementation of direct rule by the United Kingdom.

Just the thought of the possibility of people still facing the prospect of being ruled by those who are not democratically elected should be shocking to anyone, Premier Wheatley said.

“That they make your laws, that they direct your executive, that they have all power and all authority. It should be much more alarming to us than it is. And I say to you, that is not a state of affairs that we should be comfortable with and it is something that we must seek to remedy and we must chart a course that will lead us from this place,” he added.

No other option but full autonomy

Premier Wheatley referenced other islands in the Caribbean region, specifically Grenada and St Kitts and Nevis, which achieved full independence from the British and are thriving.

This level of maturity, being able to support themselves and stand on “their own two feet” is something the Virgin Islands should strive towards, he declared.

“I have adopted a posture in recent times where I’m going to do what I have to do and say what I have to say and in all honesty I let the chips fall where they may,” Premier Wheatley said while encouraging all to join him in doing what needs to be done for the benefit of future generations.

Premier Wheatley also encouraged Virgin Islanders to turn a deaf ear to naysayers who may want to discourage them from supporting “additional steps to further autonomy”.

The people of the [British] Virgin Islands, he said, are capable of handling complete control of their lands, however, what is missing is unity.

“It doesn’t mean that we have to agree on everything but can we focus on the things that we do agree on. That is the challenge before us and if we can get that right there is nothing in this world that can stop us,” Premier Wheatley said.

But my dear Premier,if they are thriving so, why are their citizens here ? Look at our current economic status. You bury your head in the sand and try to fool us by saying all is well and the economy if thriving. Take a look around you.How is healthcare? How is the crumbling infrastructure doing? In fact, which sector in the BVI can you point to and say that it is doing well?
Your speech is sounding very much like that of a wannabe dictator.Persons better sit up and take note.

The only way to FREEDOM is INDEPENDENCE, but you all are too afraid to go for it. You love having the security of riding your Slavemaster's skirt tail for a little money they throw at us each year. We will never rise above the peanuts they throw at us to keep us in line. Embarrassing! We could have everything they say we cannot have and they know we would flourish doing our own things. Tourists bring in the money, so we should have in place what they enjoy. Cannabis, horse racing all through the tourist season, gambling which they love, Harbor Day parties when the cruise ships come in, bring back agriculture week. We have so much to offer, but you all keep dragging your feet. Our next generations will still be suffering under the U.K. Thanks a lot!

Stop allowing people to dress half naked at these events including Festival Village with boobs, front and backside out!! If they can’t do it on a regular day do not alllow it period!!!!

We are not Brazil, Trinidad or elsewhere.

Government this is NOT EMANCIPATION FROM SLAVERY!!!!

People simulating sex in public and on stage including in front of children, children that shouldn’t even be allowed in these events knowing who you choose to bring here to perform on stage. These people shouldn’t even be brought here that have nothing to do with the culture.

What call a child have back stage especially late into the night taking a shot with an artist with the parent showing that off and people finding that amusing!!! The devil got people head messed up….in church on a regular, getting baptized and feting all in one. Baptism is not for show!! It has significance!!

That artist should have known to turn down that request even though it was likely a non alcoholic drink!! It starts there then you wonder why this and that later!!

You take and put people to run a Festival committee who try to appease others who don’t know better and who want to bring their fav artist as well to make money at the expense of respecting the reason for emancipation!!!!

Slaves were SEXUALLY EXPLOITED raped, abused, sold, AND THIS BEHAVIOUR IS A DISGRACE!!!!

The people of the BVI will only be fully free when the corrupt politicians have left the building.

Indeed, VI and the people of the (British) Virgin Islands (VI) have limited autonomy, despite the UN 1946 proclamation on non-self-governing territories ( NSGT), tasking the UK as the ‘ Administering Power’ to guide the VI towards a full measure of self-governance. The UK has given it a dependency-modeled constitution while maintaining unilateral power, eg, assent power, etc. The VI is shackled by colonialism and will remain shackled as long as the division, polarization, disunity,,appeasement, etc., among the people continues. Nonetheless, full autonomy is not the only self-determination option . In addition to independence, there is integration, free association , etc. Free association is a viable option. For example, the Cook Island has a free association status with New Zealand, and the Republic of Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia have associated status agreement with the US.

Moreover, the change of political status whether independence, ,free association, integration, etc., is up to a majority of the people. As such, they should be afforded the choice and opportunity through a referendum; a change should be made by a supermajority, not just a plurality of the vote,, IMO. The VI sister OT Bermuda held an independence referendum in August 1995; a majority of Bermudans chose to remain a colony. Scotland I think held a referendum on independence in 2014; a majority of Scots chose to remain part of the UK.

Moreover, before Virgin Islanders vote on a referendum, they should be briefed/educated on the pros and cons on independence, free association, integration,,etc.

Ok. The VI has been under England/UK control since 1672. It seems like some former US overseas territories have free association with the US, viz, Palau, Marshall Islands,,And Federated States of Micronesia. So why can’t the BVI pursue free association status with the UK? Is this not what the crown dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man has with the UK? Or this status is reserve for people who the UK are more comfortable with? Is it not interesting that the British Empire was the largest empire in history and the UK benefit ted immensely from exploiting the commodities, resources of its colonies but none of its former colonies have either free association with or integration into the UK? If the VI don’t want to go independent( can the UK stop the VI from going independent and does it need the UK permission to?), why can’t it pursue free association with developed, ie, US, Canada,? UK, etc?

@RealPol, hope you are not holding breath waiting for the BVI either a) free association with the UK, or b) being integrated into the UK? Colonies served their purpose , the UK can them with Noah Lyles speed. In 1967/68, the UK had associated statehood with some eastern Caribbean countries but they all got independence.

“Free Association” isn’t a possibility. Carrying on as we are or independence are the only options.

All: The BVI is engulfed in and overwhelmed by a state of lessness. Simply,BVI leadership is an oxymoron. The top leadership is a disappointment, demonstrating that experience has to be earned and cannot be purchased. This generation of leaders seemed to have nothing from the old guard, who did not have all the alphabet soup of letters before their name. Virgin Islanders better wake up from their slumber. Less, less, less....

Hon. Natalio Sujande Wheatley, Premier of British Virgin Islands, the sad reality is that you and probably most of our political Leaders do not know the true definition of the word freedom. As many and I see it, even before now and ongoing, our current political Leaders are more suppressive to us than the UK .
It is not the UK that has free access to manage our finances fairly, you the political Leaders do. It is not the UK that responsible to fix our ragged traffic roads, you our political Leaders do. It is not the the UK is responsible to improve our run down infrastructure, you our current political Leaders do, especially the VIP Government in power. Moreover, it is not the UK that is randomly wasting our finances on Music Fest and unnecessary pleasure travel overseas, especially you, other political Leaders and government workers do.

You are continuing complaining like a child who wants a pacifier in you mouth to suck on. You are right., Premier. We do need freedom, true freedom from you and other local local politicians, only after then, should we ask freedom from the UK leadership.

Premier Wheatley referenced other islands in the Caribbean region, specifically Grenada and St Kitts and Nevis, which achieved full independence from the British and are thriving.

And then (not forgetting Dominica as a prime example) the Virgin Islands could sell their birthright to devious characters and become beholden to China.

We keep having this same conversation. When this country is free of all the greedy, drug running and money laundering businessmen who end up becoming politicians - the people might trust the government. Until then, the people aren’t free either way and trust the UK more than you, sir.

Who is fully free? What freedoms does he feel that he and BVIslanders don't have that they do in the UK or USA?

A BVIslander can amount to anything in the BVI if they are ambitious.

I don’t really see what freedoms the UK prevents us from enjoying?

    Maybe someone could list them.

Independence will be OK when we have a stable and transparent form of government free of corruption and the economic means to stand on our own feet.

“ There are three types of freedom. The first kind of freedom is “freedom from,” a freedom from the constraints of society. Second, is “freedom to,” a freedom to do what we want to do. Thirdly, there is “freedom to be,” a freedom, not just to do what we want, but a freedom to be who we were meant to be.” The BVI does not have the freedom to execute representative democracy. It has a duly elected HoA but Mount Olympus can refuse assent to bills it pass for personal, etc. reasons, ie, Medical marijuana bill, ,etc. And the BVI cannot do anything about the refusal to assent to a bill, for the UK has unilateral power. Self-governing is a mirage, existing on paper and in theory only. Virgin Islanders like people elsewhere have the right to self-govern, pursuing self-determination, etc. Might is right, might is w…..e has a stranglehold on BVI exercising that right. OTs and crown dependencies are treated and viewed differently. Is it because they are of buffet demographics? Is it because there is a more comfortable level with one over the other?

In what way is the BVI not free? Past and current administrations have been free to squander the public purse without fear of consequence. Seems to me the reasons that independence is on the agenda these days is that people around here didn’t like being told that narco trafficking is a no-no as is engaging in cronyism and corruption. Even if BVIs breaks away into its own state, there will never be freedom inasmuch as the new state will still be controlled by the same families.

When I went to jamaica I was called a small islander, it didnt bother me. It was true. And people who come from down the islands shouldn't be bothered by that because that is also true. But there is an agenda to divide people here that makes no sense when we are all in the same ship. Segregating and dividing people, as not black enough or too black or too spanish or too french, is how low level iq ppl see the world and how high level iq ppl take advantage of their narrow view. However the politicians should realize that if the people want to be colonized that is their right, you can't force them to want independence.
