GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI– The Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5), has responded to growing resident concerns about access to potable water on Jost van Dyke, insisting that water production on the island did not cause the disruption.

“I acknowledge the concerns raised regarding residents’ access to potable water on Jost van Dyke, and I wish to clarify the circumstances,” the minister said. 

In a press release on September 29, 2026, the minister stated that the disruption occurred between the treatment plant and the reservoir after a leak developed in the system. The Water and Sewerage Department’s technical team was required to troubleshoot and address the problem.

The release added that this comes amid concerns from residents about the reliability of the island’s water supply. While the department attempted to maintain service by pumping water directly through the distribution line, that line also developed leaks.

The minister attributed the additional failures to the age of the infrastructure, stating that the leaks “resulted in a temporary interruption to regular water distribution".

Issue rectified

He added, "I am pleased to restate that the issue has since been rectified. During a community meeting held on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, residents agreed that constructing a standpipe would provide a dependable alternative and help ensure access to water during any future interruptions."

The release further stated that potable water is now available for purchase from the standpipe located near the Water and Sewerage Department. The facility operates from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM.

Residents wishing to access the service must contact the department at 1 (284) 468-9429. A representative will record the meter information, issue an invoice, and process payment in accordance with the department’s billing procedures.

The minister thanked residents for their patience and cooperation, saying the Ministry of Communication and Works remains committed to improving the reliability and resilience of the island’s water-distribution system.

    Let me make sure I get this straight. The infrastructure was not properly maintained in the first place. What is the purpose of paying bills if critical infrastructure is not maintained Embarrassing us domestically. But okay all is well you can pay for use of a standpipe in the big 2026. You can not make this up.

    For goodness sake when is the government here going to bring in the correct people to do the job. It’s not rocket science, if you want to be a plumber you do an aprentaship it’s the same with everything. Get the right people to do the job and stop making your virgin island family’s suffer

    Maybe I was wrong.

    We need Independence now to stop the racist, masters in the UK from holding our nation back. We should not be enduring these 3rd (more like 5th) world conditions that only war torn nations suffer from.

    Standpipes in Gaza are understandable, but a condemnation of what modern nations will do to others. The UK holding us back so we cannot have water.

    We have had $Billions of Dollars and nearly $500 Million dollars this year alone to spend on this little nation. Why will then UK not allow us to spend that money on our infrastructure. Why is the UK stopping our staff from learning how to join pipes and maintain them

    Set us free so that our policians are able to fix this.

    It's always an excuse... Anything for excuse..Sad. They playing we for fool. Mark said in 3 months he will get the BVI water issue fixed.... Getting a 4 yrs problem fix in 3 months that's either a miracle, or VIP didn't had a clue....
