ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- An eyesore consisting of waste oil at dumpsters near Crafts Alive, a highly trafficked area for tourists, was quickly resolved, according to Director of Waste Management Mr Marcus E. Solomon.

The issue was brought to the attention of the Department of Waste Management on Facebook in a post by Dean H. Greenaway also known as ‘The Sportsman’ on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. Mr Greenaway called the situation “really bad”.

According to Mr Solomon in a statement, the waste oil was “removed the same day by 11.15 AM by the waste oil contractor”.

Waste oil collected Mondays & Fridays

Mr Solomon also reminded that waste oil is collected on Mondays and Fridays at public bins and transported to the waste oil facility in Sea Cows Bay.

He also informed that the waste oil contractor collected from the bin near Crafts Alive on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, saying, “I can attest because I was there at the bin to collect some Americans who came in to check on the incinerator at 3:30 PM. Therefore, this was placed Tuesday night or very early Wednesday morning, which is unfortunate.”

Mr Solomon thanked the contractor for waste oil collection, as well as contractors from Tortola Garbage for exercising due diligence on social media as well as during their surveillance of their bins to identify this issue early and operating to correct it.

Remove the bins, let the businesses in the area contract garbage removal from their businesses, thus creating jobs for youngsters with jeeps or pick up trucks

We know where most oil users are, so waste management should place special holding containers in those areas. Cameras should be placed to see the offenders and fine them to ensure people follow the proper procedure. Two of the best ways to change people's behavior are to convince them or make them pay.

I commend the department for removing the oil containers promptly but look at the entire area!!! So early in the morning and the bin is full and running over. The entire area looks nasty oil or no oil!!!! This is really nothing to celebrate.

is there a garbage collection bin in the middle of a high traffic tourist area in Road Town? Surely the various businesses in the Craft's Alive area can dispose of their garbage at a nearby industrial area such as Pockwood Pond.

The dumpster at Village Cay is the same, as are many others. Stinks, and oil pollutes the ground all around and seeps into the sea when it rains. A disgrace.

There is too much slackness taking place in the BVI. Businesses have no pride; government has no pride and the people are surely lacking in pride. Rapid development is often at the expense of what matters. I weep for BVI.
