Voodoo Man

A story of Virgin Islands politics

Now at the end of slavery a new elite began to emerge in the British Caribbean. This was the progeny of the ‘hanky - panky’ between the wealthy British Slave Plantation Owner and the most wholesome of his female slaves.

The result of these liaisons was a fairer skin peoples eventually termed Creole or Mulatto. A type of apartheid emerged. The fair-skinned negro worked in Massa’s kitchen and within the vast house at the centre of the plantation - hence the term to this day, 'House Nigga'.

Many decades later, these Creoles were a type of bridge between the white colonial master and the pitch-black farmer who was the start of the economic emancipation of the Caribbean’s African Peoples.

In the Virgin Islands, these Creoles inhabited the prime lands in Road Town and became store owners, District Officers, Importers, Post Office Workers, Medical Personnel in the first hospitals, Teachers, and even Local Preachers. They married each other, and at the core was the maintenance of the Caucasian features inherent in the tribe.

It became a huge status symbol to possess fair skin, straight hair and a thin nose. The closer to the Caucasian type, the better. These families ran the commerce of the Virgin Islands and were very prosperous: it was colourism on steroids.

Today we all know who these families are, but keeping with this investigator's modus vivendi, they will not be named.

Now, of all these families, and this Investigator and Writer is friendly with a number, the reddest member of this elite- red skin had become an additional boost to the colourism that still infects these parts and when a member of this tribe tanned red in the baking sun, he was worshipped- he is friends with the archetype.

This is a red skin creole and intellectual at the very pinnacle of this elite group who has this crucial and somewhat perilous reputation: since the start of party politics in the mid-nineties, he has never ever called an election that was wrong. Had he been living in the USA, he would be the greatest of political forecasters.

The simple reality is that this man’s magic has made him legendary. It is a challenge predicting an election in a land where gossip and street corner talk decide political outcomes.

In fact, at the last election he not only called it for the incumbents, he predicted the result would be the result of a well-known performer- the jump-over or crossover politician. He was correct.

Now, on this hot and sunny morning in Road Town and paradise, this Ole Boy crossed paths with this local legend. He did not descend into the labyrinthine world of Virgin Islands Politics out of simple respect.

However, the next day the paths crossed again, and this Writer knew this was an Act of God. It was not simply fortuitous it was one of those coincidences that could only be the work of divinity. He immediately asked the great man for the result of the 2027 Virgin Islands General Election.

This Writer’s investigations so far, in spite of his love for logic, science and the politics inherent in astronomy, have yielded him a heap of horse manure- a slight advantage for the incumbents that turns to dust at every turn.

Now the great man looked at his ole chum in a perplexed manner. There was intense pain in his face, and he pushed his hands to his waist and bent over in a clearly confused state. This Writer clearly panicked, thinking the great man was having a stroke.

The man looked over yonder like the captain of a vessel of the 1700s with a telescope who sees nothing but danger ahead.

He stated: ‘’Igwe I am sorry for my people. They better wake up.’’ He went on to sigh and then gesticulate like the great witch doctor he has become and to pontificate in a manner that clearly shocked this Investigative Journalist Wannabe. The Legendary local forecaster saw only confusion and even disaster ahead.

He added that in his over thirty years of predicting Virgin Islands Elections correctly, he could not predict the 2027 General Election.

In the constellation of politics this writer has been engaged with over the past weeks, his ole friend’s prognostications mean that there will be a BLOODBATH in 2027. Get ready.

Slavery and colonialism created special entitlement, privileges with racism, racial discrimination, and racial subjugation. It also created itself as an upperclass and the governed being a underclass. It created a caste system with people of African descent being bottom feeders. Post Emancipation shifted from slavery, racial hierarchy, etc., to a caste and class system. The closer one was /is to white the better off they were, ie, light skin, straight hair, etc. They receive the lion share of available resources. Take a peek in history from Government House to the Methodist Burial Ground,,the trend would be clear as mud, ie, the majority of people along were light skinned with straight hair and with no sees in the air attitudes..On the social acceptability ladder, whites were at the top and blacks hugged the bottom rung. The same attitude and behavior still persists.. It is time to tore that social acceptability down, carting it off to the dung heap. Anyone entertaining the upperclass should not bother coming to the BVI,just turn around.

I concur. There are too many self-serving entities in the virgin islands. They talk a good game, but all about self - some online news blogs as well, only posted what's favourable for their agenda. Things will get worse, before it gets better, if the mindsets of soo many do not change. If not, expect a race to the bottom.

Voodoo Man headlined the commentary. I may have missed the connection but in perusing the commentary I didn’t get the connection in the commentary..Was there some type of irony deliberately trying to be communicated? Yes, after emancipation the BVI became a highly stratified community with Road Town, not Road Town proper, becoming the center of the stratosphere. Road Town had a specific, definite look, leaning towards white, ie, straight (some even “conk” their hair), light skin( some bleach skin) thin noses, etc.
