Volunteer work in VG draws attraction

“The Rotoract Club had taken it upon themselves to refresh the wall, so they have been doing that as a community project. The new side of the wall now has fifteen panels and what we have been doing is soliciting persons the community, artists to assist us with the valley but the challenge has been funding. Everyone wants to be paid,” said Ms Sharon Flax-Mars, a member of the group VOICESS.
The group consists of community minded residents who would raise funds to do things much for the benefit of the community. Ms Mace A. Marx of MACE of ARTS was once a resident of Virgin Gorda but has since migrated. She heard of the desire to have the wall further add to the tourist attraction of Virgin Gorda decided to render her free service and return in time to have it done for this year’s Easter Festival.
The wall is along the main stretch to the Baths and other areas of the Island that are frequented by tourists. Mace got to work immediately upon her arrival as the group pooled resources, got some donations especially from Clarence Thomas for the material and even before the work was complete scores of tourists and even residents have been frequenting the area specifically for photographs.
When this news site passed by recently, the evidence of the added attraction was very clear. Mace was busy at work but was frequently interrupted by passersby for photo opportunities. “Everyone loves this. I can’t count the amount of persons that have stopped to take picture over the few days that I have been here doing this,” said Ms. Marx.
She told this news site that when she heard of the desire to complete the wall she immediately made contact with the group and expressed her willingness to do it as her signature contribution to the Island that she once called home. “It’s such a pleasure for me to do this, to come back specially just to do this and at this time. I always wanted to use my talent to bless this community. I really love Virgin Gorda,” she told this news site.
She was also high in praise for one of VI’s young and budding artists who is also an Emerging Fellow award recipient, Tia Modeste, who she said did a significant amount of hours in assisting in a major way. “There were a few other youths who came along and did their bit as they had the time but I must commend Tia. She is a young artist that has a very far way to go,” said Ms Marx.
The wall features some of the attractions that are common to Virgin Gorda but most importantly is the section that has been dedicated to a few of the fallen heroes of the Island, namely Mr. Elwin Stanley Flax, Ms Iris O’Neal, Mr Oswald ‘Blanco’ George and Mr Robinson O’Neal.
Today April 15, 2014 was set as the day when the final touches will be put on the wall and it is anticipated that a simple dedication will be done during the opening of the activities of Easter Festival come this weekend.
