DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – “People don’t get to a place like this all by themselves…” said Mr Robert A. Mathavious as he graciously accepted an award at the New Life Baptist Church’s (NLBC) annual Unsung Hero Awards celebration yesterday, March 2, 2014.
Mr Mathavious, who said his sole purpose is to fight for the Virgin Islands, credited his employees, friends and family as those who have been most instrumental in his success thus far, “they are the people on whose wings I stand,” the honouree gushed, “they are the real heroes.”
Tears flowed all around as the Managing Director and CEO of the Financial Services Commission, Mathavious became one of four honourees of the NLBC’s annual service of thanksgiving, including Mr Merritt Herbert, Mr Terrence Chinnery and surprise honouree Dr Sylvia M. Simmons.
The NLBC Unsung Hero Awards, now in its tenth edition, chose to honour Mathavious, who was described as the Financial Service’s rock of Gibraltar, for his outstanding work as the premier professional within the FSC and for securing the integrity of the industry from which so many benefit.
Mr Herbert was selected for his outstanding contributions to the broadcasting industry of the Virgin Islands and for additionally cherishing the Agricultural history of the islands.
Mr Neil Blyden, in offering a tribute on the radio icon’s behalf, recalled Herbert’s immense and focused dedication to his job at the ZBVI radio station and recounted an epithet of Herbert once winning an award for growing a 75-pound prize winning pumpkin.
Meanwhile, Terrence Chinnery was selected as an honouree for using athletics as a tool for education and self-advancement, breaking gender barriers that allowed both male and female players to benefit from the Territory sport of Baseball.
Dr Simmons, who elegantly presented Mr Chinnery’s case for being an award recipient, was herself honoured as the surprise recipient for NLBC. Dr Simmons was hailed for her work as a Counsellor and Sunday School teacher and also for the general impact she has had on the Territory’s youth.
According to Bishop John I Cline, these innovators are successfully advancing the Virgin Islands not just locally, but globally. He added that the Territory is a better place because of the commitment of hard working men and women such as the honourees.

Firstly, let me use this time to remind you that we are celebrating Black History during the month of February. Now, out of respect for the recipients and a prime opportunity to demonstrate class, may I suggest that you try your utmost to avoid being negative. This initiative is really not about church, politics or socialization - but rather an opportunity to identify people among us who have been contributing to the growth and development of the territory and its people. Also for your information 'Unsung Hero' is not a patented phrase and can be used whenever it is appropriate to do so (as in this case). My challenge for you is that you live your life in service on a POSITIVE level so that at some point you too may be recognized as a human being worthy of life. If your comment is a reflection of your current trajectory then I am of the opinion that you have a long way to go...and I strongly recommend that you begin working at it immediately.
