VI’s Sheldon A. Frett featured in ‘Get on Up - The James Brown Story’

The movie was released on August 1, 2014 internationally and was shown at the U.P.’s Cineplex here in the Virgin Islands as recently as yesterday August 6, 2014. This news site had the distinct pleasure of an exclusive interview with Frett as he had managed to steal some time away, with the permission of his agent, to visit home and be with his father Mr Betteto Frett who he said has always been there to support his journey.
“My agent called me and told me that one of the casting directors for the James Brown movie would like to see me in person out in Mississippi for an audition in the role in the movie,” he said. He said that he was so elated at just the invitation that he opted right away for the challenge.
After about four auditions he was given a spot in the movie as Susie’s Soldier where he played the role as her love soldier. “It was big for me because Susie was being played by Academy Award nominee Viola Davis and she played the role as James’ mom,” he told this news site.
“I've done everything the right way, setting goals and focusing on my vision before auditioning. I joined the screen actors’ guild SAG in summer 2003 to be able to compete as a professional. The James brown movie was one of my first auditions. I remember my agent advising me that I blew the director away being an amazing talent with no previous major credits. Since then I've continued to work hard and knocked down greater doors than I could imagine,” he added.
But just what would have caused him to be fingered as great pick for the role? Mr Frett had taken on the challenge to produce a movie titled, ‘Bound’, a story that was written by a college friend Brandon Hirsch. Frett produced and starred the movie which circulated quickly and was well favoured by most.
He said that it was his acting in that movie that resulted in his agent, DawnLandrum@LandrumtsLA being asked to have him audition for the James Brown story.
Sheldon A. Frett is a popular face in the Charles Barkley Capital One commercial and will be seen in the soon to be released TV series “The Red Band Society” being produced by Stephen Spielberg.
Mr. Frett is a product of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College who went on to further his studies at the University of Tampa where he graduated with a bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and a Minor in Theater Arts. Since graduating in 2009 he decided to take on the acting profession with further studies even as he works professionally today.
