VI’s first local CoP, Attorney & Legislator Vernon E. Malone passes
Mr Malone died peacefully at the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital in Road Town, the capital city. He is survived by his wife Icis, a former prominent banker and son Malcolm. He was 76 years of age having been born on June 5, 1947.
The family are the owners of Icis Villas in Brewers Bay, on Tortola.
First local commissioner of police
The deceased originally from Long Look began his public career as a school teacher before joining the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF). Once he joined the police force, he rose quickly through the ranks and served as the first local Commissioner of Police from 1992 to 2002.
During his tenure, he did a lot to build the force and pushed education for many of his officers. He helped start a programme at the H. L Stoutt Community College for Police Officers and sometimes took money out of his own pocket to support his officers.
Today, many of them have gone on to earn Bachelor's and Law Degrees.
Because of his love for education while as a police officer, Mr Malone earned his law degree and opened his own law firm Vernon E. Malone & Co with offices in Brewers Bay. He also ran for political office with the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) in 2007 and was victorious, having earned the second-highest votes at-large. He was unsuccessful in his bid for re-election in the 2011 General Elections.
A statement of class
In 1996 the late Mr. Malone earned a Queen’s Police Medal (QPM) honours and the deceased had an illustrious public life and career in many areas from business, to policing, law and politics and made his outstanding contributions to the Territory he loved.
The Management and Staff of Virgin Islands News Online offer our condolences to his immediate family and other loved ones on the passing of Mr. Malone.

Sad news in every way Vernon was a great man .

Let’s stop looking at everyone with rose tinted glasses.
Condolences to his family.
Mr. Malone came from humble beginnings in Long Long and rose from poverty to become somebody and lived out his dreams. There was much about his journey to be admired particularly thru the eyes of many young kids coming out of the Long Look/Fat Hog's Bay/East End community. He was one of us, and many of us in that community were proud of him and his accomplishments.
Many people did not think much of people coming out of Long Long back in those days, but Mr. Malone rise in life, showed the rest of us in that community what was possible with hard work.
From teacher to police officer to Police Commissioner, lawyer, business man...he did quite a lot in his 77 years here on this earth. May he rest in power.
