VI’s Elinah Phillip breaks National Record with non-advancing time in Tokyo

- finishes second in 25.74 in Heat 6 of Women's 50m Freestyle

TOKYO, Japan- Virgin Islands swimmer Elinah Phillip swam a Personal Best and National Record to finish second in her 50m Freestyle Heat at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, minutes ago, July 30, 2021.

The 21-year-old Phillip, at her second Olympic Games, swam in Lane 1 of Heat 6 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, registering a non-advancing time of 25.74.

Her performance; however, saw her lower the Virgin Islands National Record for the Women’s 50m Freestyle event from 25.82 to 25.74.

Improved Olympic performance

Phillip also improved her overall finish at the Olympic Games, finishing 34th overall out of 81 swimmers who took to the pool in the preliminary round.

She had finished 48th in the prelims at the Rio Games in 2016 when she was only 16 years old.

Meanwhile, the winner of Heat 6 was Anicka Delgado of Ecuador, who clocked a non-advancing time of 25.36.

    BVI govt should now go ahead and finish the pool in VG so BVI swimmers can have a proper place to train

      How about going one step further and actually teaching every child in the VI to swim for free?

        Every person is responsible for their own safety. Hence learning to swim is a part of that safet. God help those who help themselves. There swimming classes available in the BVI, also take your children to the beach and get them aquatinted with the water.

    I was very impressed by the way she swam.........and she keeps getting better.
