VIP confirms district candidates @ July 14, 2018 Congress meeting
Unlike when another party had their Congress meeting, no media professionals were tossed off the property and asked to stand by the road side.
The public has been calling for a change of Government for over two years, as they have reportedly lost confidence in the National Democratic Party (NDP) Administration and have said they wanted to see the candidates of the Opposition VIP. Many residents often argued they “want a change, however they do not know who the VIP is bringing.”
While the 13 seats have not been filled, the VIP has made a significant start by confirming its candidates for some 6 out of the 9 districts for the next general election, due by June 2019. It is our newsroom's understanding that the party will have a full slate of 13 candidates, in an attempt to unseat the NDP or any other new political party.
They are…
At the Congress meeting last evening, they confirmed Director of Culture, Luce Hodge-Smith to run in district 4; Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, Kye M. Rymer will run in district 5, while former Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works and former Director of the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry, John Samuel will run in district 6.
In addition, VIP President and College Lecturer, Dr Natalio D. Wheatley aka ‘Sowande Uhuru’ will contest in district 7, while Sister Islands Coordinator Vincent O. Wheatley, who became a hero following Hurricanes Irma and Maria for his works on Virgin Gorda and Anegada, will be the party’s standard bearer in district 9, according to information obtained.
Is Fahie At Large?
Meanwhile, the Party Leader, Hon Andrew A. Fahie will run again in District 1, dispelling rumors about him running for an At Large seat. He will be the new Premier, if his party wins at least 7 seats in the upcoming elections.
The party Congress is expected to meet again to address and vote for four At Large candidates, and thus far only one person, former Permanent Secretary and businessman, Julian Willock, has publicly announced his intention to seek the party’s nomination.
Mr Willock released a new video message over the weekend to VIP delegates, obtained by our news desk from social media, saying what he brings to the table and warning of the challenges ahead; however, he could not be reached for comments, as our newsroom was told by a campaign aid “Mr Willock is off island”.
Time for a change
There is expected to be about three to four political parties contesting the upcoming general elections in the British Overseas Territory of the Virgin Islands and political pundits have said, it’s too early to call or predict what will happen; however, the people appear to be in the mood for a change of government.

Still need to see VIP plan of action and milestones for leading the territory out of its current crisis. Need to see its priorities, funding plan, implementation plan.......etc. Need to see its plan for constructing a world class infrastructure (roads, water, electricity, sewage, drainage, drainage, ports, gas), educational platform, diversifying economy, lowering the cost of living, more political and governing autonomy, access and availability of health care, preserving and protecting the environment, strengthening the social safety net, reforming the civil service, reducing/preventing violent and property crime, training and educating local human capital, lowering skyrocketing cost of living, air lift, improving ferry system, consumer protection, whistle blower legislation, insurance legislation, sports programmes, revising NHI, reforming procurement, protecting land........etc.
