VIP calls win on District Debate
Mr Wheatley went up against opponent candidates, Mr Jose C. B. DeCastro of the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) and the ruling National Democratic Party’s (NDP) Honourable Hubert R. O’Neal.
Polling Day
Chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Honourable Myron V. Walwyn (AL) believes however, that the proof of the pudding lies in the overall process on the final day—when voters take to the polling booth.
The debate, which was organized by six youths of Virgin Gorda and was held at the Catholic Community Centre in the Valley, without an overwhelming turnout, as the venue proved to have been too small.
Included in the audience were hundreds who join the conversation via live social media feeds.
The objective of the debate was for the potential candidates to deliver—on as single platform—their vision for the District while at the same time, demonstrating their abilities, to field questions and give impromptu responses.
Public Office
At the end of the night, Hon Fahie called it a win for his candidate Mr Wheatley.
“All the candidates did excellent because it takes a lot to put your-self out for Public Office, so I don’t disrespect anyone.”
According to Hon Fahie, “I might disagree with their policies but in terms of their ability to come out and their determination to come out, I commend each one of them Mr Hubert O’Neal, Mr Jose DeCastro and Mr Wheatley.”
He said however, “Mr Vincent Wheatley has shown us that he is more than able, qualified and knowledgeable, willing humble and respectful and with ideas to represent the people of the VI…We are going to pronounce him tonight, the next district representative for the Ninth District.”
The VIP Chairman revealed that debate is a common practice internally.
“We sit down and we ask each other questions, we go out meet the public, we go out every night canvasing ideas from the people so we be confident about what the people are saying and we mix them and get the best blend and bring them to the people.”
Youths
Commending the youths for getting involved in the affairs of their country, Hon Fahie said, “I commend them for putting on a debate that I thought was balanced and very in-depth in terms of content and preparation so I give God all the glory and honour.”
He said the event shows that the Territory’s people are maturing to the level where more people are interested in solutions.
Hon Walwyn also used the opportunity to express profound admiration for the youths’ bold step and also for the Candidates sticking to the wishes of the youths and not backing out from the debate.
He believes however, the debate doees not decide who wins the District Seat.
“Sometime you can’t necessarily determine who is the best candidate based on the debate…Tonight was an interesting debate.”
He observed however, “the proof of the pudding is in the eating…Yes debates are good but yet they are not the clearest indication of the competence and dedication of someone.”
He used the occasion to publicly challenge other leaders of respective parties to a similar debate.
“I think they are a very good thing for the community.”
