VINO turns 9; Has new look
The popular, but sometimes controversial online news site, is also sporting a new look, having removed the number from its brand and replaced it with the site’s founding date.
The online news site recently saw an attack on one of its founders, Mr. Julian Willock, by what many described as a racist article by a Caucasian reporter, Ms Genevieve Glatsky, who writes for the local tabloid BVI Beacon.
It remains unclear whether Ms. Glatsky is a racist; however, the tabloid she works for has been accused over the years of racism. Ms. Glatsky has denied being one.
Mr. Willock, who is still associated with the news site through its parent company Advance Marketing and Professional Services, has not exercised any editorial control for years, notwithstanding there is nothing in law preventing him from doing so, even with his new public post.
Popular online news site
The news site is still popular for its weekly cartoons, its thought-provoking headlines and Young Professional articles that highlight young people in the Virgin Islands (VI) doing extraordinary things.
The nine-year-old online news site has also accepted a variety of commentaries from residents and persons overseas and of course, the blogging/comments after each story, which has become the staple of the online news industry.
Over the past nine years, VINO also withstood a former legislator, Myron V. Walwyn, who spent eight years [2011-2019] in the House of Assembly (HoA) bashing the news site in an attempt to get at one of its founders and now Speaker of the same HoA, Hon Willock.
Mr. Walwyn was booted out of office in the February 25, 2019, general elections.
VINO still boasts of its over 40 thousand readers/hits per day, and some of the most committed advertisers on the market.
VINO is back
The news site is also in the process of hiring new staff after the devastating hurricanes of 2017 that saw its Headquarters in Cane Garden Bay on Tortola damaged. Everything, including laptops, cameras, recorders and stationery, was lost and this forced the site to operate from offshore.
Virgin Islands News Online maintains a high journalistic standard and has a history of being fair, balanced and first but accurate, with no personal agenda. After nine years, VINO reporters are not for sale with their integrity and solid credibility, and they will continue to bring the news in the most professional way possible.
We thank the staff, including our ‘Team of Reporters’, our Board of Directors and the hundreds of thousands of readers locally and worldwide, and our long list of advertisers for their steadfast support and encouragement over the years.
We are hopeful for another nine years, as we stay true to our mandate of being accurate, balanced and objective.
