ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Leroy Peters, a Vincentian national, who used a machete on his girlfriend and male roommate in 2009, was fined $2,140.02 this afternoon Monday, December 12, 2011 in the High Court.

He has to pay $1,000 to the court by March 15, 2012 or spend three months in prison; pay the former room-mate’s hospital bill that came up to $640.02 by December 31, 2011 and compensate the former room mate $500. If Peters fail to pay the fines he will have to spend two months in prison.

According to the Judge, he was spared jail time because she found the whole incident to be a "soap opera" and he was under extreme provocation, humiliated and betrayed.

Peters was charged with two counts of assault causing grievous bodily harm.

According to court records, Peters and his girlfriend at the time were engaged in an argument during the evening of December 5, 2009. Prior to that, the VC had confessed to him of sleeping with the roommate at least once.

He left the apartment and returned later the same day and was locked out, court records state. In a fit of anger, he allegedly burnt a few of his girlfriend’s clothes and as another argument began, he got a machete and started to hit her about her body.

Court records revealed that the Virtual Complainant (VC) ran into the bedroom of the roommate who was a male, and it is alleged that when he [the roommate] enquired what was going on, he unfortunately received some injuries as well.

He was represented by Colin Foster, a legal aid attorney from St. Lucia.

I would love for her to explain her reasoning of provocation. Attacking someone with a machette and burning the mattress seems like a wild thing to do after being "humiliated and betrayed". A bit out of control? Some anger management issues perhaps? A machette could easily kill. So why such a paltry fine and not even some anger control classes?

You all need to stop judging the man. You were not there when it happened and you were not in court to hear the evidence given. Mr. Peters, go and find yourself a good woman who you can trust. You are a handsome young man so you shouldn't have any problem finding a good woman. The judge gave you a second chance to prove yourself. Stay out of trouble

With these kinds of pyan-pyan fines and sentences, it won't be long before they begin chopping up women and beheading them as they already do in their home country. Judge, what are you really thinking? LEGISLATORS, please help out the cause of justice and security in this country. These judges are making a mockery of the court system!!!

so according to the judge any man who finds his woman stepping out on him has with a payment of hospital fees and a $1000.00 to court with $500 comp to any random person who is around during the attack, can attack her with a machete meat cleaver cutlass, whatever. So the domestic violence bill they just passed and made a big up about counts for nothing. Good to know justice is alive and well in the BVI, the public prosecutor should appeal this joke of justice and get him in jail for at least 3 months then deport him. Or when his work permit is up for renewal make him get the police report and get him booted out, yes it was a pain in the ass but it got rid of scum like this guy. Any man who attacks with a cutlass/machete is not a man but a lil boy who is scared of himself and his inability to fight with his fists or to treat his woman properly so she doesn't step out and if she does just leave the biatch!
