ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Vigilant Stars benevolent movement on Thursday September 3, 2015 made a donation of items to the Family Support Network (FSN) in aid of the Non-Governmental Organisation’s drive to help families in need in the territory.

The donation took place at the FSN’s office in Road Town. Present were members of Vigilant Stars and some of the staff and the volunteers of FSN.

Speaking to this news site, Public Relations Officer Esther N. Fraser explained the aim and objective of the group in making the donation.

“We are the Vigilant Star UD119 Order of the Eastern Stars and we are a benevolent organisation that aims to contribute to different community charities and events for community building and also the benefit of our society at large,” she said.

“We are here to contribute to the school drive, to provide school supplies to FSN so that they can distribute to those in need in the community. We are all mothers and sisters and aunts and God-mothers and so it is important to be able to give back to the less fortunate. It is a privilege that we are able to do this today and we are glad that we can support FSN,” she said.

“And while our donation is small we are an organisation of 11 members where we got together and did this out of pocket but we want to make sure that we extend the challenge to the community at large to inspire them to support organisations such as FSN who are staples in our society and without whom many could not cope,” said Fraser.

Executive Director and Counselor at FSN Dr Sylvia M. Simmonds said she welcomed the contribution made by Vigilant Stars. “We have had about 30 to 40 inquiries from mothers who need supplies for school so this would be a great help to contribute to those families in need, who simply don’t have the funds to buy school supplies,” she said.

She noted that FSN is an NGO which receives very little support from Government. “We do receive some support but at the end of the day it is not as much as we need to continue our functional drive to keep the community informed and also equipped with the things needed to survive,” she said.

Based on googled information "The Order of the Eastern Star" is a Freemasonic appendant body open to both men and women. It was established in the mid-1800s by a noted freemason. The order claims to be based on teachings of the Bible but appears open to people of all religious beliefs. Hmmm...Church are we awake?

If FSN is a non government Organization (NGO) why is it listed under the Social Development Department?

We assume it is listed under Social Development because it does social/community work so if someone were looking for that kind of help it might be easier to find. BVI Red Cross in a non governmental organization as well and it has it's own listing under government. VISAR is also a non governmental organization and for some reason it hasn't made the government listing under any heading. No one knows how the telephone book was organized like that, no one asked FSN if they could list it under the government listing. It might be confusing to some but as it doesn't seem to hurt anything, more than just be confusing, no one has seen fit to ask for it to be changed.
