VI wins again @ Chess Olympiad
First VI Women Chess Team doing well
Tiandra Scatliffe, in her debut at only 13 years old, became the first VI female to score at a Chess Olympiad, beating her opponent from Grenada. Her other team members, Jasmin Brito and Alexis Ganigan, also delivered standout performances and secured individual victories. Team VI won the overall match against Grenada. Deniqua McSheene also had her most impressive performance of the Olympiad so far.
This is the first time the VI has a Women’s team at the Chess Olympiad. FIDE in recent years has encouraged more girls and women to play chess through a campaign.
An update from the BVI Chess Federation said the VI, through support from local organisations like Guana Fund, BVI Tourist Board, First Caribbean and the Ministry of Education, was able to have a Women’s team at this year’s Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.
Meanwhile, in the Open Division match against Niger, Jordan Hinds got his second win at the Olympiad while Simon Potter was also victorious. Art Christopher earned what the Federation called a “well-fought draw” following five hours at the board. Shamoy Joseph’s performance was also outstanding on his board.
Jhon Samuel is the other member of the Open Division Team. He secured the VI's first win earlier in the Olympiad.
