VI 'was fortunate to welcome [The Mighty Sparrow] to our shores'- Premier Wheatley
Born Slinger Francisco, The Mighty Sparrow performed several times in the Virgin Islands, most recently in November 2019, famously entertaining the Virgin Islands crowd while in a wheelchair.
Describing The Mighty Sparrow as The Calypso King of the World, Premier Wheatley said the late calypsonian was more than an entertainer. "He was a cultural giant whose music became the soundtrack of Caribbean life for generations. Through his unmatched talent, sharp wit, and commanding stage presence, he united people across islands, borders, and backgrounds. To countless Caribbean nationals living abroad, his songs provided a comforting connection to home, identity, and heritage," Dr Wheatley stated on September 27, 2026.
The Premier added that The Mighty Sparrow's remarkable body of work chronicled the Caribbean experience with honesty, humour, and brilliance. "Whether addressing history, social issues, race relations, politics, or the joys and challenges of everyday life, he possessed a rare gift for transforming observation into art. His mastery of storytelling, satire, and double entendre made his music both thought-provoking and deeply entertaining, while helping to elevate calypso onto the global stage."
'Legacy will endure for generations to come'
He said songs such as Jean and Dinah, The Lizard, Obeah Wedding, Lying Excuses, and Drunk and Disorderly have become timeless classics that continue to resonate with audiences young and old, adding that The Mighty Sparrow secured a place not only in Caribbean history, but in the cultural heritage of the world.
"As we reflect on Dr Sparrow’s extraordinary life and legacy, we give thanks for his immense contribution to Caribbean culture and the pride he inspired among our people. Having performed here at different times over the years, The Virgin Islands was fortunate to welcome him to our shores.
"To his family, loved ones, and the people of Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago, the Government and people of The Virgin Islands extend our heartfelt condolences. May you find comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will endure for generations to come."
'We were thrilled to host this Caribbean legend'- Dr the Hon Karl Dawson
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker and former President of H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Dr the Honourable Karl Dawson (R1) recalled that The Mighty Sparrow was one of the featured artists on the H. Lavity Stoutt Performing Arts Series for 2010-2011.
"That night, as only he could, Sparrow thrilled a full house with songs ranging from among his humorous, witty, social-issues-challenging, inspiring and his then recently embraced gospel selections.
According to the family of the late calypsonian, they found comfort in knowing that before his passing, The Mighty Sparrow had given his life to Jesus Christ and was baptised in the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
"We were thrilled to host this Caribbean legend as he enjoyed the islands, had a great visit with Premier Ralph T O'Neal, and was presented with a plaque recognising his contribution to Caribbean music and culture by Deputy Premier Hon Dancia Penn, who could not resist taking a dance to some of his music on stage."
Dr the Honourable Dawson also recognised the efforts of the Performing Arts Coordinator, at the time, Mrs Linnette Smith-Baa, who he said worked tirelessly "as we brought Sparrow and many other top Caribbean artists to the Elieene Parsons Auditorium."
