ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister for Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has called on persons visiting the Virgin Islands to respect the laws of the territory and allow local law enforcement agencies to do their job.

He was specifically referring to visitors who come to enjoy the territory as a world-class sailing destination, over complaints about police stop and search.

“I was going home one night last year and there was a stop and search, and they didn’t see it was the Premier’s jeep and they stopped the Premier’s jeep so if they stop me, what is a yacht in the harbour to stop?” he said at the press conference held on December 10, 2021.

“You just cannot create a two-tiered system when it comes to the law!... What do you want law enforcement agencies to do? We have to be able to come to grips that we have wide-open water around us with over 60 islands and islets and while we want to have persons come to the BVI and to feel welcome, we also have to police the waters to make sure that they are safe and even those very persons that have those concerns are safe,” he said.

Concerns will be addressed - Premier

Premier Fahie stated that the concerns plaguing that sector will be addressed, “I understand the concerns that some of them have brought forward, we are going to have some symposiums with all the law enforcement agencies and the VI Shipping Registry so we can see how we further ventilate those concerns.”

He further stressed that there has to be a balance because the law enforcers have their role to play and “Yes, they are visitors and, but they are not exempted from the law.”

“If they are doing random spot checks at sea that has to be respected because they do random spot checks for the locals when they are at sea.”

Hon Fahie further said, “So, if you are a visitor and someone does a random spot check, we have to do this because we don’t know where firearms are, you don’t know where drugs are! You cannot just say they are visitors so they are criminal-minded free.”

Many are coming in too - Premier

Responding to talk that many in that sector are leaving the VI, Premier Fahie said, “I always say we have to name the problem and not say who leaving and who coming because from where I sit a lot more persons have requested licenses and also other resources that they have asked for to come in.”

He said the law enforcers are trying to tighten up areas that the ‘Triple I Code’ audit flagged and the VI is trying their best to maintain a Category One Shipping that it has currently.

Soon they’ll be stopping you to see your papers. Just like in Australia. If it come to that, everyone needs to be arm to defend their freedom and don’t act like we don’t have tons of guns on this island already. No violence against each other we had enough of the senseless killings but raise war against the people who want to bring tyranny upon us and the future kids of this generation. All you tough guys on the block and tough guys behind the keyboard if it ever comes to the point where we have to be stopped and checked for papers. We need to unite and raise hell but only to the ones that put us in that position. No innocent women and child should be harmed in the process. It’ll be up to us to take our country back by any means necessary. May Yahweh guide us

Its not the stop in search, its the manner in which its done ... if you have armed officers and dogs waking you up at 6am... demanding paper work.... its alarming. We have a tourist sector we despritry relay on and are trying to rebuild, lets not scare them away.
Imagine you were in a foreign country and someone banging on your hotel door with guns and dogs ....
A gentle stop and question, no problem.

Yuh full of Bull Crap! From your perspective it's okay for Countries or Islands outside the Virgin Islands to raid Visitors( however deemed)but it's all terrible to Police Our Virgin Islands. Why can't you all keep your negativity to yourselves and leave Us Alone! No matter what, you All NOT GOING TO BREAK US ALL! THIS IS OUR TERRITORY AND WE WILL OMIT ALL NEGATIVITY WITH RESILIENCE AND POSITIVITY.

Hey, you don't represent me, and I one of we.
Who wants to break us? Tell me that? Go on. Who wants to break down the BVIslander? And why?
Who said this poster thinks raids is ok in other countries but not here? The poster didn't.
In fact the poster said they understand stop and search happens all over but it doesn't have to be done in a heavy handed threatening way. You call it a raid, like them guilty before they even searched. Stop and search is not the same as raiding a suspected criminal because you have evidence of crime. That has to be heavy handed, but not stop and search.
You completely ignore this persons point.
And jump on them like you have some kind of insecurity sickness about us - anything we do is always right? Anything them white people say is always wrong?
It's this that gets us all a reputation - for being simple minded and arrogant.
Its you who bringing us all down with your low grade use of the brain God gave you.
And your post talking about negativity? Jesus Lord help us!

You are also under the law, why do you say this as if you are above it? You are making a statement that we are all equal and then you say this as if you are surprised they did not just let you pass because they didn't see who you were. Very poor example

“I was going home one night last year and there was a stop and search, and they didn’t see it was the Premier’s jeep and they stopped the Premier’s jeep so if they stop me.

you wont get much support with your blog but that is how funny life real is. when you leave the islands and go into london, new york, Johannesburg you are subject to searches and maybe poilce brutality while when some people come here we should simply throw the rule book out the door....all persons with in bvi costal waters have to be subject to search:

we do not make guns in this territory so we should search boats and planes, law and order is a must

we can not bring back the old time tranquility but this gun thing is dangerous it left unchecked innocent people will die

I will bet he wasn't searched so what you are saying is crap.

Please. If you really want to do a stop and search why not show up at Willy T on a sunday when all the tortola gangsters are there smoking weed and flexing with their fake gold. Come inspect a few of those go fast boats and see how many are properly registered, have paid import duty, and have cruising permits. Dont give us this BS premier its too obvious what you are trying to do to the marine sector.

as a matter of fact an attorney of law arrived in road town few months ago and within hours of his arrival was arrested for using cocane in the village cay areas now cocane is not sold over the counter how get from your friends

      i challenge u
call the hot line and inform on a black person see who swiftly babylon shows up

it take forever for them to respond to the same call when the report is about mr green eyes
babylon in his private villa or private boat

Whats is the big deal??? If you have sailed anywhere in the world you will know that almost every country does this.
I have been stopped while sailing in Canada, the US and other places. All they want to do is ensure you are not smuggling etc. If you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about.

Anywhere out side Tortola stop and search any type of water transportation entering their Country. Those speed boats you often hear at nights on the water is the ones running the guns into the Country. Do spot checks on the local ferries, ports authority, the women with back packs and large travel bags and packages coming from the USVI, it is not rocket science. For a place so small it is infested with illegal guns.
  • Stop & search (13/12/2021, 14:50) Like (1) Dislike (1) Reply
You can do all of that without the machine guns.

Seriously you can’t even put it to automatic and fire it at a criminal with pedestrians around nearly every scene.

what’s the point then when it’s obvious the hand gun & tazer is more appropriate in nearly every public situation.

Those assault rifles are for at sea chase or on a battlefield.... where there is a need for them.

It’s not right to senselessly -just like the criminals- to be scaring people and making our atmosphere unbearably uncomfortable!

I prefer the police to keep their small arm holstered not trying to search people with a assault rifle.

Nor walking around town with machine guns or Christmas on mainstreet. Where the hell will you fire it in town or on Christmas on mainstreet?!

You can’t even aim it without knocking someone down by mistake or hitting them a elbow. WTF

Police need to take a hard look at how they portray themselves & how their spending our money because they’re looking more shady and untrustworthy than the criminals.

Cancelled trip to the British Virgin Islands. Will not be putting my Family at risk. To much gun violence is going on. My elderly parents narrowly escaped gun violence last week in ST. Thomas at the cruise ship dock while shopping during a jewelry shop robbery where two people was shot and is in critical condition.

Tortola is going to lose out on the tourist that is coming to Tortola very soon. The cruise ships is going to stop coming. Look at what happened last week in the USVI while the ship was in port. The only reason the ship did not pull out of port at that moment is because they could not leave the other passengers that were not on board the ship.
