ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A call was made for the people of the Virgin Islands to invest, protect, respect and value nurses, when the Territory observed International Nurses Day on Friday, May 12, 2023.

Chief Nursing Officer, Ms Jacinth Hannibal while issuing the call, highlighted the contribution nurses continue to make towards the advancement of healthcare access within the Territory.

“Our nurses play a significant role, on our sister Islands, in the Prison, the National Health Insurance and other insurance systems, in the care of our elderly, in administration and on the frontlines. We want to make sure that they know their services are invaluable to the people of the Territory and that we love and appreciate them,” Ms Hannibal said.

'Thank you for your service'- Chief Nursing Officer

The Chief Nursing Officer, according to a press release from Government Information Service (GIS), further recognised nurses for their commitment and dedication to providing services during the Territory’s most recent difficult times, which included working through hurricanes, floods, and the pandemic.

“We thank all of our nurses for their selfless service and their contribution to the health of our population. Today is our day to recognise the value they bring to life and health, from birth to death, and we just want to say thank you for your service," Ms Hannibal said.

The community was invited to observe International Nurses Day by making nurses feel special through an outpouring of love of and appreciation.

'Our Nurses: Our Future'

This year’s theme for International Nurses Day and for the rest of the year’s campaign is, “Our Nurses: Our future”.

This campaign sets out the direction for nursing and highlights the strategic steps necessary now to secure a future state that addresses global health challenges and improves global health for all.

International Nurses Day is an annual observance held on May 12 that commemorates the birth of Florence Nightingale in 1820 and also serves to highlight the important role nurses fulfill in health care.

Until you do the job yourself, you’ll never know how hard a job it is.

Nursing is a profession that requires years of education and training, commitment, hard work and long hours. Nurses should be well compensated for all that they do for us.

To do this in BVI please change the management at BVIHSA. It is a key factor in the failure of Healthcare not progressing how it should in the BVI.

I would hope that xpat nurses are represented in the new constitution and those that served for 6 consecutive yrs be granted resident status. "Show Respect and appreciation.".. Just the same way that Police who served for 7 consecutive yrs are eligible for belonger status.. I am not suggesting giving them belongers status. I am suggest something less. Give them resident status.. They deserve it..Same for Doctors.

That is not a matter for the constitution. It is a matter for the immigration act that the VI Government has the power to change

Expats nurses have left their territory in seeking better pay and benefits which they have gotten from the BVI. The BVI is a small territory of below 35,000 whilst other jurisdictions are 3x more and counting! Many of these nurses sooner or
later compare BVI vs US salary. SMH
The BVI needs a Nursing School here, só it's people can serve the BVI!
Over the years the Locals once they got their nursing degree did not return due to under pay with out benefits. Many of these Locals have become extremely successful in the U S I guess there's no coming home to serve after all!.
      We need to act now!

When will the hospital and the Government make all of us with 20 plus years of service permanent and pensionable instead of the meager pension scheme instituted my Madam Bumptious.

you can become a travel nurse in the USA. work nine months out of a year and make 0ne hundred and twenty thousand dollars. Of course, you have to be a REGISTERED NURSE. Life is good.

I’m a travel nurse and yes you can make about that but it depends on where you travel! And that salary is not true for all travelers. So don’t think every traveler walking around here with that amount. Every agency pays different! Also we do not always see that amount when there are bills to pay unless you are living rent free or in your mamas house. So life ain’t good always! Stop stereotyping us.
