NEW YORK, New York - The British Virgin Islands' relationship with the United Kingdom is at a critical juncture with the UK General Election looming on July 4, 2024, that is shift power from the ruling party to the opposition party according to Special Envoy to the Premier Mr E. Benito Wheatley.

Mr Wheatley in a recent statement to the United Nations said shortly after, the Governor's reform program agreed upon between the UK and BVI would be completed and hopefully the Ordering Council in reserve that can suspend the BVI Constitution will then be lifted.

Mr Wheatley in his statement said he statement also offers major considerations for the UN visiting mission to the Virgin Islands, which is a welcome development in the decolonization process.

Opportunity to reset relationship

"There will be an opportunity for the UK and BVI to reset their relationship and have normalized relations. However, for there to be a genuine modern partnership between the administering power and territory, things must change. Excellencies, you cannot have a modern partnership and the colonial relationship at the same time. In a modern partnership, you do not use the threat of removing democracy from a people as a tool of leverage over them."

Mr Wheatley called for a modern partnership that where the VI is allowed to thrive on the decisions of its democratically elected legislators.

"In a modern partnership, you do not withhold assent to medicinal cannabis or any other legislation that would set up a legitimate industry without proper justification to the parliament in question. In a modern partnership, you do not close off free association as a political status option without dialogue between partners and its viability."

Further, he said that in a modern partnership, the administrating power does not leave the territory without access to climate finance for climate resilience while at the same time providing the same to other small island developing States and supporting their sustainable development.

Mr Whealey who has been petitioning for a better partnership between the UK and VI said joint declaration agreed between the UK and Overseas Territories was a positive step in trying to reframe the relationship, but much more needs be done to establish a modern partnership whose fundamental pillars include democracy.

More to consider

"Sustainable development, climate resilience, human security, prosperity and self-determination. These are the things that will make a modern partnership between the UK and Overseas territories fit for purpose in the 21st century and the direction of the modern partnership must lead to the achievement of a full measure of self-government. To complete the decolonization process," he said.

He added that the VI and next UK government will enter negotiations on constitutional advancement. The primary objective of the next round of constitutional reform must be the closing of the democratic deficit between the UK and BVI.

"The outcome must position the people of the territory to take full responsibility for their internal affairs. In the first instance and to subsequently make a final decision on their political status based on the future, based on the political status options sanctioned by the UN," he said.

This is a country that has been fueled by the drug trade for decades. The persons in power see UK as a threat and so they should. The corruption is real and part of the current government officials. No one is without blame

Strong, powerful, clear as mud, relevant, pertinent, required, etc., goals and objectives, charting a new path forward for the VI. Modern colonialism is an oxymoron. Self-governing with high anti-democratic deficits in the 21st Century is not a modern partnership. A dependency-modeled constitution is not a modern partnership. A partnership with one side having unilateral power is not a modern partnership. Frantz Fanon, a French Algerian thinker, whose work deals with the effect of colonialism and the response of oppressed people to the end of European rule, notes: “Colonialism is violence in its natural state.” Fanon also notes: “The settler keeps alive in the native an anger which he deprives of an outlet; the native is trapped in the tight links of colonialism.” Is there a close, clear, unequivocal link between colonialism and racism, discrimination, and prejudice? Many appeasers are of the belief that the colonialists have the interests of the governed at heart and foremost. MLK: “ Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance.” Further, Sir Winston Churchill, statesman and former UK PM, notes: “ An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile hoping it will eat him.” Are crown dependencies treated the same as Caribbean OTs?

To E. Leonard, you provide much for us to ponder but it will go in one ear and other the other quickly . In the meanwhile, the territory is mired in stagnation and in a deplorable state, stiuck on top dead center. The political stalwarts have exited the stage and the young , inexperienced is on stage and it glaringly shows..The inexperienced is costing and slowing the territory’s growth and development..Experience can’t be bought; it must be earned and it takes time. Book knowledge is not for success . Hands-on experience, repetition, building a reservoir of experience , which can drawn on when needed to guide one in their decision making.

To @E. Leonard, I was chilling, pondering, wondering, etc., on a myriad of serious things, viz, monster hurricane Beryl, Russia -Ukraine, Israel-Hamas, China-Taiwan, North Korea-South Korea, the political uproar in the US,, the tethering on the edge of WWIII, etc, and the things in the territory, ie,,the referendum on same-sex marriage, the referendum on independence, the Greedy Bill , the Crown policy, the rising cost of living, the BVIEC-BVIHSA situation, the CoI implementation and impact, economic diversification, ie, blue economy, the glaring and costly inexperience of government, and so on . But your post is emblematic of the BVI and the course it is on, ie, unserious, wrongheaded, etc. Anyway, you are a damn Frig…the Frig….out till next time.
