VI ranked among safest islands in Caribbean
The travel advisory website Travel Safe Abroad collates data on a wide range of crimes, including muggings, violent crimes, and vehicle thefts, to rank countries based on their safety.
Of the various Caribbean islands, those with the highest safety scores are Aruba, Bermuda, and the [British] Virgin Islands.
The Virgin Islands had a safety score of 89 out of 100, while Aruba and Bermuda both had a safety score of 90.
Making the top 5 safest Caribbean islands were Barbados and Bonaire (80 points each).
Increased levels of crime in Caribbean
According to The Telegraph, in a publication on January 21, 2025, titled ‘What the Caribbean’s spiralling crime rates mean for your holiday’, of the 20 countries with the highest murder rates, 12 are Caribbean islands.
2024 was the bloodiest year for Trinidad and Tobago. Data shows that there were 624 homicides in the twin-island republic in 2024, 47 more than the 577 killed in 2023.
Jamaica reported 1,039 homicides by November 23, 2024, reflecting a slight increase from 995 during the same period in 2023.
Haiti’s situation remains dire, with armed gangs controlling significant portions of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and other areas. In the first six months of 2024, at least 3,661 people were killed, underscoring the severe security crisis.
In the Turks and Caicos Islands and St Vincent and the Grenadines, the number of killings in 2023 was 50 per cent and 63 per cent higher, respectively, than in 2019.
In St Kitts and Nevis, the murder rate has soared by 121 per cent over the same period.
