ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI—The Virgin Islands (VI) is experiencing a resurgence in its tourism sector following years of challenges from Hurricanes Irma and Maria, which were further compounded by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This, according to Mr Clive L. McCoy, Director of Tourism for the BVI Tourist Board & Film Commission (BVITB & FC), who is of the view the Territory has entered the "final stretch of recovery," marked by surging visitor numbers, expanded air connectivity, and significant developments in accommodations.

As such, looking ahead, Mr McCoy noted that with visitor numbers climbing, infrastructure expanding, and a renewed emphasis on sustainability, the Territory is poised for a banner year in 2025.

“We are proud of the progress we have made, and we remain committed to ensuring the British Virgin Islands remains a premier destination for leisure, luxury, and adventure travel,” he said recently while speaking with TravelAge West in an article published on January 2, 2025.

Growth & Recovery

Mr McCoy revealed that visitor numbers grew by 9.9 percent by the end of the third quarter of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.

“We approached the million-visitor mark in 2023, and we are currently on a trajectory to surpass that. This growth spans all three primary visitor categories: overnight stays, cruise arrivals, and day-trippers,” he added.

The upward trend, projected to continue into 2025, is bolstered by positive feedback from tourism partners and the reopening of iconic properties like Peter Island Resort and the rebranded Biras Marina & Resort, he surmised.

According to the BVITB & FC Director, “Our natural attractions are at the heart of our tourism offerings, and we aim to protect and preserve them in a sustainable manner for locals and visitors alike.”

Additionally it was noted that Bitter End Yacht Club has also expanded to include a boutique hotel component, enhancing the Territory's luxury offerings.

What are you bringing them to see. What do you say to them to make them want to come here. I recently saw a video of Nevis and ALL its historical sites are well kept and maintained. Island is clean grass cut roads very decent. And the hurtful part is they’re spending EC$ we who are spending Trump dollars can’t get anything done. When the Government keeps an opening ceremony for a toilet you must know things not good.

No infrastructure, negative feedback from cruise ship visitors, charter companies moving assets to other islands, on Fodors list of places not to visit, I think you are as deluded as the Premier.

Eating drinking living big so many people come here living lives they could only dream of where they come from and all you hear is criticism and bad talking. Even locals jump on the political bandwagon and acting the fool. Rewind to 50years ago when we had nothing but lived in unity and harmony and realize what a sickening ungrateful set of people we have in this country.

There is no investment in the BVI National Parks. I saw a post on Facebook about the USVI holding a public meeting to discuss the new trails and Mooring balls they are installing in 2025.
In the BVI places like Prickly Pear have no Mooring balls, no bar/restaurant that is open every day. Now just fences on the beach stopping everyone but Cruise Ship passengers from using the National Parks best beach. And the dock the government built 2 years ago are falling apart. It all looks like crap.
BVI tourism from charter boats brings in people that want to come ashore and spend money. They eat at restaurants, drink at our bars and shop in our grocery stores AND THEY TIP!
The hiking trails are all grown over and unusable. This is simple bush cutting. We are ignoring fundamental investments in the government owned tourism product. The USVI is budgeting for this stuff and getting it done. We need leadership here in the BVI to keep us competitive with our neighbors in the Caribbean.
Tourists have a choice. The BVI need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask are ask attractive as our neighbor island destinations? If not, what can we do to fix this? Stop this 'we the best' crowing and come up with a real plan to make this place better.

While reading the article, did you pick up that National Parks, the Government and the business community work together to make things happen. Most tourism base businesses not waiting on government to plan for them, they do it for themselves. I do agree that our infrastructure needs to be replace and maintain regularly but it the business community can assist also.

I went to the QE II park and the state of the bathroom. Oh my gosh and a cruise ship was coming into port at the same time.... who's responsible for such. I hope they are not encouraging the visitors to go there
