ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Talk show host Cromwell Smith aka Edju Enka said the Virgin Islands is at a point where teachers should now have to step in to parent children who lack parenting at home.

Mr Smith was at the time interviewing Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) on ZBVI 780 AM on February 13, 2023.

According to the radio host, the proliferation of crime in the territory at the hands of youths could be a result of bad parenting in the home.

“It has come to the point from a social service perspective, we are going to have to help to parent our children and I discussed a long time ago whether we ought to give teachers more responsibility, along with more pay and training, to manage our students who were not getting their training at home,” he said.

‘Upsurge in extreme misconduct’

Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) recently reported of an upsurge of “extreme misconduct” in the public secondary schools.

“I can regrettably confirm that some of our students are threatening the lives of their peers, teachers, administrators, and security officers and are threatening to destroy school property.

“Additionally, Madam Speaker, our schools have found students in possession of marijuana and marijuana products as well as e-cigarettes and alcohol. Brass knuckles with knives attached are being confiscated from students far too frequently,” Hon de Castro stated at the Third Sitting of the Fifth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) at the Save the Seed Centre, in Duffs Bottom, Tortola on February 10, 2023.

Gov't systems should train children- Mr Smith

Meanwhile, Mr Smith added that while training begins at home, if the parent does not have the capacity to train their children, systems should be put in place.

Mr Smith said the VI government should therefore assist the parents in parenting children so that society would be free from all the violence and the disrespect now being seen.

Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8), during the same episode of the show, said with the upsurge of gun crime in the Virgin Islands, local law enforcement needs as much support as possible.

“We need to support the law enforcement agencies as much as we can. It has to be a true partnership,” he added.

We have been doing this for years! Where have you been? Elmore Stoutt, Authur Selwood, Germaine Scatliffe, Paul Myers, and many other educators have taken this charge for the last 20 years. What did they get from said parents in return? Ridicule, disrespect, and, in a few cases, physical assault at the hands of students. Officials have tied their hands at the MOE and DOE. The teachers are already dealing with enough issues: lack of resources, little pay, no appreciation, verbal and physical abuse, and other poor working conditions. What more can they offer? Many of us used to and continue to buy our supplies, offer counseling services to students on issues we are not trained to handle, and provide food to students who turn up hungry. The problem you alluded to must be addressed on a community and societal level. The values and principles that once promoted the notion that "it takes a village" have long been eroded. We are more competitive as a society, and individualism is celebrated. You cannot simplify this complex and ongoing issue; asking teachers to help is unfair and a gross oversimplification of the matter at hand. With that said, I must say respect to the educators who continue to make things happen despite your daily challenges.

Teachers must be kind and try to help their students as much as possible. Parenting comes from the home. What is neglected in the home cannot be done by teachers. Money cannot fix it. Children spend more time with parents than teachers. It will be outrageous to place parental duties on teachers. Parents must be held accountable for some of their children’s actions and. behavior.

It has some teachers that don’t know how to speak to children. Just how the teachers were brought up or how they get handled in relationships they take it out on the children.

Children may be void of the nurturing at home and to have to come to school to be spoken to like dogs or pigs is not the answer.

Some of these teachers need therapy before being placed to be a teacher, principal, or any way involved with children.

Teachers need self reflection to examine their own behaviour

A teacher can change a child life for better or for worse. If you are a teacher and you don't understand your pupils then you should not be in that job. A teacher who always picking on a child will make that child not liking that subject where as a teacher who try to help a slow learner with minimal disrespect to that child might make that child become the top student. Its not all the children who need this help just a few and their lives can be changed. do not add fuel to the fire. It have teachers calling the kids names and so on this is bad.

JSPS is one of the schools that needs students to speak up about one such person.

those days gone where some of we grew up where the community raised us and we had to be very respectful at all times

It comes down to social interest: some folks are in this territory because of economics

It is very important that the people over-stand there are still very good children in our country

the media strives on accentuating the negative and hardly showcases the positive which going on in the country

Headlines will be the shootings and not headlines relating to the boy or girl who was successful at school

If we wait until the children are in school to start the disciplinary process we are too late. Discipline must start even before a child can talk.

Help the Community in general by instructing the women to be more discerning in their behaviour and choosing fathers for their children. There are varied means of birth control. Before during and after sex. The women responsible for birthing these subject human creatures of destruction are of a race and ethnicity where their men...sons brothers fathers refer to them as bit...hes and wh...res These women are in compliance with behaving as such to the extent that they copulate in accordance. The result is that no family structure and rarely an identifiable and or responding fathers is known and least of all present. The resulting community of wild "Dawgs "with heavy chains loose, lacking respect and unmanageable is attributable to the women in my opinion. They were birthed and raised by these women. First these folks need to recognize and accept responsibility to initiate change. .. An insurmountable task as evidenced by the Caribbean chain and the plight of Black families all over. Locally the comparison of effective parenting pre the arrival en masse of the offending portion of a specific demographic into these VI and now is all too evident.

You couldn't have said it better. @ all who have negative comments to say to teachers, I challenge you to just try on a teacher's shoe--don't even take a step.

These people with platforms to reach the public need to stick to facts and stop trying to parent the parents. The fact is every individual walking this earth has a mind of their own and will 100% of the time do exactly what they wanna do. Fact 2 a parent cant be around child 24/7 when they have to work to maintain said children. Fact 3 and my favorite if the Government agencies which will remain nameless would stay out the schools instructing kids how to strong arm their parents maybe the parent can handle their responsibilities without fear. My point is this you all sit and blame parents when you the government and legal system putting your nose where it dont belong blame your dam selves first.

U need to get a truck ,/ there is a big difference between drag up and being brought up , when those that were not brought up have kids , the fruit doesn't fall too far from the tree ,/ and now we have the kids being exposed to all kinds of drugs thats a dangerous combination , / and as I said before ( the parents will have to get their kids checked out to see what's in their system or body ) , IF the parents really love and care for their children they should not be afraid to have a blood
test , children are taking weapons to school along with drugs , and some of them are even threatening the teachers ,/ and some are outsmarting their parents so some parents will say not my child they are angels , some of them are in for a rude awakening . Sadly .

95% of the teachers don't care to be at work. They don't care to teach the kids why because they are not getting paid. This kind of thinking is bad but all over the world is going through the same thing. Under pay and plenty Work. You go to all establishment now and the people are so miserable they don't even want to deal with you as a person

An English Language teacher with 3 or 4 classes of 30 students each is expected to train and correct what the parents cannot do or refuse to do? Impossible! Teachers are not behavioral specialists. Instead parents ought to stop giving their children everything they ask for and start spending more time with their children.

He really was not thinking and clearly does not understand the magnitude of what he is saying.

I agree but when a teacher spot one such child he/she can inform the guidance councillors and help that child. All government school here have guidance councillors, they can help those kids that need the help.

However , Parents have dropped the ball. I remember when Mr Hodge a former principal from
St Kitts came here and was teaching in the English Department he took on the unwritten rule of a truancy office . The children loved him and at a PTA meeting an outstanding Citzen in the community stood up
And insulted and humiliated Mr Hodge to the lowest degree for trying to help to bring discipline in the school
The school was already feeling the positive effects … After that incident he left shortly afterwards . PARENTS you are the first trainers .. Do not spoil them
    They will make you shame

Parents need to parent and allow the community to assist through partnership, mentorship and coaching. Parents have to admit when they need help and also allow positive minded persons to speak to their children. The teachers' burden is enough! I am not a teacher but I have children in the system. I can say that the teachers already do this. In Primary school, many do even more.

Teachers have always played their part but resources, the govt policies and the community attitudes have tied their hands. What would be more useful is for the govt to hire professional therapists and counselors for each school. Not pastors or do gooders but actual trained professionals to get to the root of the issues. Many of the badly behaved children are being abused at home or not given meals. How cam they then cope with the pressure of school. Are there proper govt facilities to place these kids who are clearly being mistreated... are there feeding programs... or is this just the usual lip service. All we see is more infrastructure devp so we can siphon some cash on the side rather than focus on the social problems blossoming in this society. Please provide these minors proper help before they become social problems and stop trying to pass the buck around.
