VI mourns death of education stalwart Elroy A. Turnbull

Mr Turnbull served as Chief Education Officer from 1988 to 1999, and later as Permanent Secretary in the then Chief Minister's Office in 2003. Before then he was a Science teacher and Mathematics teacher in the Virgin Islands secondary school system for many years.
The now deceased Turnbull was a lover of sports and was also the 1st BVI Basketball Federation (BVIBF) Public Relations Officer/Statistician.
Following his retirement from the public service, Mr Turnbull occasionally appeared on radio shows where he gave his opinion on happenings in the territory, including on the political scene. He was a member of the National Democratic Party (NDP) for over two decades but was not shy to speak out on issues affecting the party.
A man who was not afraid to speak his mind
In August 2021, Mr Elroy A. Turnbull shared that he believed the United Kingdom (UK)-sponsored Virgin Islands (VI) Commission of Inquiry was nothing but a charade and rather a part of the UK Government’s plans to take over the territory.
Turnbull’s suspicion was revealed during the August 30, 2021, edition of the Umoja Show with host Cromwell Smith aka 'Edju En Ka', where he said the agenda of the British to take over is partly due to the VI’s financial services sector.
Tributes
Meanwhile, many tributes have begun to pour in on social media, following the death of Mr Turnbull. Many described him as a lovable and professional character, who made an invaluable contribution to the territory.
The Management and Staff of Virgin Islands News Online extend condolences to the family and friends of the late Elroy A. Turnbull.
