VI may face travel advisories with rising crime – Doug Wheatley
During the Speak Out BVI programme aired on May 28, 2013 Wheatley said, “We heard of some instances of crimes, people stealing stuff and that sort of thing, which is becoming quite a problem here.”
The host suggested that the problem needed to be addressed more aggressively and robustly than has been done thus far.
Wheatley said, “Sometimes you wonder who these people are, who are dressed in black… dressed with black bandanas and hoodies and that sort of thing and you wonder if they’re not your neighbour, they’re not the person you spoke to today, the person you interact with…”
He said the question arose because of the apparent camouflage often worn by youths of the Territory at night. “… so you can’t tell who they are but they could just be somebody that you know in normal life who seems alright,” he said.
“Sometimes they don these apparel, become incognito, you can’t see them, you don’t recognise them and you don’t know who they are,” he added, “and they perform these acts and then of course they take off all their camouflage and masquerades and so forth and become normal citizens again.”
Wheatley expressed that this was not a good thing that was happening and stressed that the Territory must do everything in its power to try and stomp this out.
He recommended that the root causes of the matter be identified and described it as a complex matter involving several contributory factors.
While noting that he has lived in other Caribbean countries, the host noted that the early signs are often ignored at the beginning and panned off as just a “few little fellows getting into mischief”. “We don’t give it the kind of attention that we ought to and before you know it, it mushrooms,” he said.
He said any avoidance of the issue would be at the detriment of the society and the life of the society, especially since the VI is a centre for Financial Services and Tourism.
Wheatley reflected on a current upsurge in criminal activity in the Bahamas and the consequent travel advisory issued by the US government concerning this. “You don’t want to hear of travel advisories against the BVI,” he added.

The only travel advisory the BeeVI will be put on... is the way the case B...H and his fellow alleged drug man get their case trial here and not the US. Court need to hand the US government these people before it gets worst of us in the British VI.
USVI is safe no travel advisory needed over there.... lol
