ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Following his return from the recent Caricom Heads of Government meeting in Georgetown, Guyana, Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) says the Virgin Islands is looking to establish tourism links with Brazil.

During an update on March 1, 2024, on the recently concluded 46th Regular Meeting of the Heads of Government of CARICOM, Hon Wheatley said he had talks with the President of Brazil.

“Importantly, I also participated in a special session between CARICOM Heads and our highly respected Latin American partner the President of Brazil, His Excellency Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva who is currently the Chair of the G20,” he said.

Dr Wheatley added that the deliberations with President Lula were warm and friendly and both sides committed to strengthening the partnership between Brazil and CARICOM.

“The areas identified for cooperation were regional security, transportation, infrastructure, sustainable development, climate change, global governance, and trade,” he said.

Hon Wheatley noted that for the Virgin Islands, "we are particularly keen on establishing links with Brazil, especially sailing and the wider marine sector as Brazil is the biggest market in Latin America and there is a need to tap their market as as the VI diversifies our tourism source markets."

Liat 2024 & inter-island fast ferry

Meanwhile, Hon Wheatley shared that CARICOM Heads also discussed regional transportation and that he is very pleased that progress is being made toward the launch of LIAT 2024 and inter-island fast ferry service between CARICOM Member States to help address the regional transportation challenges faced in the Caribbean.

The Premier reminded that traveling from the Virgin Islands to other parts of the Caribbean, especially going south, can be very difficult and these types of solutions are desperately needed to improve transportation connectivity.

“Of course, we also discussed climate change, sustainable development and the need for greater support to Small Islands Developing States from the international community to support our response to these issues. More advocacy work must be done in the lead-up to the next COP Meeting, including gaining international acceptance for the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index as a new metric in considering concessional financing to SIDS,” he said.

As previously raised, the Premier said it remains unfair that the Virgin Islands and other countries and Territories in CARICOM categorised as middle or high-income are locked out of this international support because of GDP per capita that does not capture high vulnerability to the negative impacts of climate change.

With a new invention called the Jet Plane .It takes people from point a to Point B travelling at about 650 miles per hour. It is how destinations like New York can attract visitor from China which is about 7000 miles away. It just might work this carzy idea called the Jet Plane.

Sure - how about having to land and take off on 3 airports with a total flight time of 14 hours to get to Brazil. It seems that you are an aviation specialists..

3 airports and 14 hours to get to Brazil ,,,,,,I believe he was referencing Brazilian tourist coming to BVI . I am not sure the BVI has large enough population to impact any destination.

It's 2024, we have a $400 million budget annually and we cannot get water to our homes/businesses nor keep shitty water off the roads. But we are going to forge tourism relations with Brazil which is 2000 miles away. WTF is this guy talking about?

Some of these comments are missing some days from their primary school classes where they would understand how tourism works. This is about Brazil becoming a supply country for tourism, we are a host country and developing supply countries is important for growth in the tourism. Not to say I disagree or agree with the Premier on this, but some of these comments are just baffling.

"How do you develop tourism links with a country 2000 miles away?" You know people can travel right?

I am disappointed with some people who have little experience and poor geographical knowledge of the world to make comment that they are clueless about. It is a very good idea to spread your wings to invite as much tourists as possible to visit the Virgin Islands. Without a wide range of countries to have tourists from, the country will not have enough revenue to sustain the economy. I have seen tourists as far as from Senegal in Africa coming here and the distance several times longer than coming from Brazil. What those bloggers don't know about, they should not attempt to expose their limited knowledge of.

This is the dumbest thing I have heard! You haven’t even begun to penetrate the US and UK which is your main markets. You have barely scratched the surface on places like Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Sweden. Where people can actually afford to come and spend $1500 a day here! We have so much more markets to try to reach in these places that have fed us well. But you talking about immoral and poor Brazil? Where buggering is the preferred form of sex? Where BBL and fake body parts is normal? Ladyboys? Sex festivals? And that’s what you want to bring to BVI? Yes they have some extreme wealthy but majority is poor and can’t afford to come here, not for the lil few dollars you give to Tourist Board. Anybody who have half a brain and know anything about BVI Tourism will tell you this absolutely a stupid idea and comment. Do you even know what the BVI tourism product is and what we sell? Do you even know what out target market and demographics are? Have you ever run a business to understand these things? Have the industry people told you that they want Brazilians coming here? Tourism is in deep doodoo with this type of nonsense thinking.

If your feeling ill, no need to take a pill. just take a trip to Brazil. Perhaps Portuguese will now be introduced in our schools as a fourth language in addition to Mandarin, Spanish and Bvislandish
