VI Gov’t, Caricom sign MoU for increased Border Security
In a brief ceremony held yesterday, Tuesday, December 6, 2022, Premier Wheatley signed on behalf of the Government and for Caricom IMPACS, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Jones signed as part of the regional effort for increased security and border protection in the region.
“I am happy that the Virgin Islands is formally joining… the regional effort for security and border protection, through the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding for the exchange of Advanced Passenger Information between the Government of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Community Implementation Agency for Crime and Security,” Premier Wheatley said at the ceremony.
API will allow for advanced screening- Premier
According to the Premier, the API System allows some of the screening that must be done on arriving travelers to be completed before they arrive at the VI’s doorsteps, and this will allow for faster processing.
“Additionally, we can have a greater level of comfort, because we know that the persons we are admitting into the Territory have been screened against international databases by the API System.”
The Premier said the VI feels good knowing the territory will be passing forward the same benefits to countries that receive travelers from the Virgin Islands when the territory transmits API to the system.
