ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Football fans at many of the sports bars around the territory were not in the usual celebratory mood as their team the Kansas City Chiefs were demolished by the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

The Eagles beat the Chiefs 40-22 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, denying Patrick L. Mahomes II and the Chiefs an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl.

The Chiefs were playing in their fifth Super Bowl in six years and much of the pre-game hype focused on a potential three-peat.

But the Eagles utterly dominated in New Orleans, in particular their defence, which showed why it has been the NFL's best this season.

Kansas City's star quarterback Mahomes was sacked six times and threw two interceptions as the Chiefs' bid for NFL immortality was ruthlessly quashed in the Superdome.

It is the Eagles' second Super Bowl win having claimed their first in 2018, despite the Chiefs managing to keep their star running back Saquon R.Q. Barkley relatively quiet.

Instead, quarterback Jalen A. Hurts stepped up to silence those who continue to question his passing game, throwing a superb 46-yard touchdown pass to seal a humbling defeat for the Chiefs.

Victory was revenge for the Eagles' 38-35 Super Bowl defeat by the Chiefs two years ago, when Hurts put in a superb performance but ended up on the losing side.

This time he helped Philly put the game beyond the Chiefs and was later named the game's Most Valuable Player.

Among the big names at the game were President Donald J. Trump, Taylor Swift, Serena Williams, Lady Gaga, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kevin Costner.

VI’s football fans watch on

The game was shown at most of the sports bars across the territory, including on Virgin Gorda and Jost van Dkye.

On Tortola, many persons viewed the game at Mulligans in Nanny Cay, where several televisions were set up for easy viewing. The game was also projected on a large screen on the lawns of Mulligans.

Many of the fans there appeared to be backing Kansas City and were left quiet for most of the night as the Eagles nearly produced a shutout performance.

And even as the Chiefs put some points on the board late on, many of the fans were well aware the die was cast.

Such was the same scenario, according to reports, at Foxy’s and Hendo’s Hideout on Jost van Dyke.

Foxy's never fails to get in Super Bowl mode and Sunday was no different. Some of their staff could be seen wearing 'referee' apparel and there was even a 'green carpet' laid out.

Persons also viewed the game at the popular Aromas in Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park, Pussers in Road Town, Rhythm & Sands in Cane Garden Bay and Rock Cafe by Pussers in Virgin Gorda.

Apart from the game, fans enjoyed various promotions offered as part of Super Bowl Sunday.

American Football, softball and horse racing are the top three sports enjoyed by Virgin Islanders.
