VI Festival & Fairs Committee accused of issuing bounced cheques!
One vendor noted that he was given two cheques that were returned for insufficient funds.
Deputy Chairman of the Virgin Islands Festival Fairs Committee (VIFFC), Birchfield B. Lettsome, told reporters at a press conference last month that, based on the preliminary figures examined, just about $1.8 million was spent so far on the festival’s expenses, and this was inclusive of the $1 million subvention given to the Committee by Central Government.
Mr Lettsome noted the funds taken in came from ticket sales, private sponsorship, and partners, as well as fundraising activities and other sources which he did not elaborate on.
Did they make a profit?
Both Mr Lettsome and Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), who is responsible for culture, noted that a full report outlining the current standing of the VIFFC’s accounts was not available during last month’s press conference.
It is unclear what arrangements have been made with the vendors with the returned cheques.
Chairman of the VIF&FC Dirk L. Walters, when asked about the returned cheques, requested us to disclose our sources. He also asked that the affected vendors get in contact with him directly.
Premier Wheatley did not respond to our request for comment.

Blasted attention grabbers.
Even the current DPP ought to be able to secure a conviction for a returning cheque!
I guess they over spent the funds.
People got what they voted for. The fact that you gave a set of grossly incompetent, no sense whatsoever set of people another chance, over the skilled, competent and sensible ones, the country deserve everything it get.
came to deal with service providers nothing in the kitty
One of the stipulations for renting a spot to the booth owners should be that not a single nail should be found in their assigned area. If found, it would forfeit some of their deposit. The grounds should be inspected prior to returning the deposit. If a deposit isn’t required, perhaps it should become a requirement in order to ensure the grounds are left clean and tidy.
Shouldn’t our City Manager be putting pressure on the festival committee to clean up properly?
Why can’t we do things with pride? Why must we always accept substandard conditions? Until we as a people start demanding better, we will always be treated poorly.
