ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has called on [British] Virgin Islanders to position themselves to be able to benefit from the territory's growing tourism economy.

"The BVI is doing very well, but some of us are not well positioned to be able to benefit from the success happening. So the BVI is doing well and if we want to do well, we have to pay attention to the trends,” Hon Wheatley said.

The Premier was at the time speaking on the sidelines of an event on March 25, 2024, when the Government of the Virgin Islands inked an Investment Agreement with the family-owned JOMA (Properties) Ltd for the development of a new hotel and an upgrade to the marina at Port Purcell on Tortola.

Dr Wheatley reminded that financial services has done well for the Virgin Islands; however, the intent is to show that the VI could diversify its economy, and balance it with stronger investments in tourism.

Airport runway extension a necessity- Premier

“To build that tourism product would be impossible without the extension of the runway and extending that runway to allow direct flights from the Eastern Seaboard of the United States and places like New York, North Carolina, Atlanta...is going to have a transformative impact on our tourism product,” he said.

The Premier said there are many investors from all over the world knocking on the VI’s doors and saying they believe in the "BVI" brand. “The numbers will continue to grow in tourism and we have to make sure that we are well positioned to benefit from that growth,” he added.

'Reflect that optimism'

Meanwhile, the Premier said the VI is upgrading its incentives regimes, including through the Investment Act, and looking for other opportunities to encourage persons to make these investments.

“Just like Brother Colin O'Neil said, ultimately the government and the people of the Virgin Islands are beneficiaries when we encourage these types of investments.

“The BVI is doing well, tourism is doing well in the BVI. Of course, we have some areas that we need to fix and there are some areas that we need to improve on…. But trust me, when I speak to visitors every day, and when I speak to investors in the tourism sector, they're extremely optimistic, and we want the people of the Virgin Islands to reflect that optimism and make sure that you're well-positioned for success in this thriving tourism industry here in the Virgin Islands,” he added.

Sooooo you are a regular worker and then what? You will remain a regular worker and just expect to be paid more? All you need to do is start your own business and pay all your regular employees big money then let us know how it goes.

@see. This can only be done if individuals are given the opportunity to do so. Many applied for trade licenses and applied for loans but were denied for very little or no meaningful reasons. It's clear that it depends on who you are, where you from, and who you are related to plays out in these decisions. No matter what, the terrible is very small and employees in these establishments are influenced by what they hear from running mouths.

You are doing well because of your hefty pay check, the likes of which you never enjoyed, but because of your brainlessness, you blame others for your govt' failures to grow the economy.

For you, It is always someone else fault.

Ok so somebody help me here please cause I’m a bit confused. In the past 49 hours I have read multiple articles where the Premier is glorifying himself and his administration, announcing that BVI economy is flourishing, in general all is well in the BVIs. Why are we tolerating this? Why are we allowing him to say these things? Why are we not heading to the streets in peaceful protest for better roads, running water, accountability for our taxes, schools, cost of living and the list goes on. Mr. Premier what is wrong with you sir? Are you not seeing the sufferings of tour people? Good lord help us all with you at the realm.

real clown with the double talk, chasing tourism dollars will sink the territory turning most "locals" to just servant class for the rich. "A 2022 report from the UNWTO, for example, found that “tourism leakage” amounts to an estimated 80% of all money spent by tourists in the Caribbean region."

The USVI has been chasing tourism dollars for the last 30 years, the amount of total visitors has not increased much despite all the marketing and investment in ports etc. how has tourism benefited most locals other than low wage jobs? Tourism revenue does not stay in the territory. So why you think the VI will fare differently?

This is another victim blaming situation instead of seeing what can be done to turn our people into exporting entrepreneurs.

You know we can not compete with a foreigner from across the world when it comes to servitude. At the first licks we will go home.

What i gather from this phrase "not positioning themselves" is he thinks people have all the options and arent working hard enough.

Sir if you are a doctor by heart or sales man what point is there working hard to be a chef that serves people on vacation?

Is this dude for real? How many cruise passengers come back by plane and spend a considerable amount of time here?? Many of the cruise passengers bring water and snacks off the ship, some even go back to the ship for lunch. We are NOT giving them an impressionable experience, for them to want to stay on shore. The Town is a dump. Not to mention the bad smells as you are walking through, and the garbage. Owners of buildings are not being fined for keeping their surroundings clean, I mean look at Bobby’s Supermarket! And let us not forget THERE IS NOTHING TO DO, isn’t that why you yourself is hardly at home???? I think Natalio needs a reality check. He so busy spending our money on his ventures he has lost touch.
