VI derelict vehicle cleanup continues for export to Colombia

SPANISH TOWN, Virgin Gorda, VI – In an effort to further clean up the territory, the Department of Waste Management in the Virgin Islands (VI) is continuing efforts to remove derelict vehicles and other scrap metals from across the Virgin Islands.

This comes as part of a project where a 5000-ton barge had arrived earlier in the year to remove scrap metal and old vehicles and have them sent to Colombia for processing. 

Director of the Department of Waste Management Mr Marcus E. Solomon said the project was completed on Virgin Gorda (VG) on December 14, 2023, and has moved to Tortola where more derelict vehicles are being loaded to be sent to the South American nation. 

Mr Solomom on behalf of the Department thanked the public for their support in helping to identify derelict vehicles across the territory.

The removal of the derelict vehicles from the Pockwood Pond site began earlier in the year on April 11, 2023, when over two thousand tons of scrap metals were processed and loaded for export. 

The department has previously said that while in Colmmbia, the scrap metal and derelict vehicles will be used for recycling purposes.

    Me no understan how come bvi export metal to colombia but me no have metal for roof in purcell. Me have to go Rico and wait rain to stop so me could go back to me house with no roof. Please no send car metal to colombia and let make tin for roof for peeple to use in bvi so me house can be dry. Tank you bvi government #memissomar.

    In the future, The cost of removing these abandoned vehicles should be passed on to the owners. As soon as these are removed, more will show up.

    Can you go to East End please. Every lot is a dump site. Same for West End. Also Roads Town. Also all the Ridge Road. in fact can you clean up District 1,2,3,4,5 6,7,8 and 9. The place is doing well looking like a scrap yard, but it is supposed to be a prime tourist destination with a sophisticated population that thinks it is a world leader on environmental issues. Time to clean not just the place but the minds of politicians that seem to like it this way.

    Please please please please please please remove the derelict vehicle in Baughers Bay. Hon Walwyn, you campaigned on cleaning up the district. We need you to follow through for us with this.
