ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The [British] Virgin Islands (VI) U16 Basketball team were left facing a battle for 7th or 8th place, today July 9, 2016, at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Championship following a defeat against Suriname on Friday July 8, 2016.

Suriname held on for a 70-65 win against the VI in the first classification game at Under-16 championship at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, in Georgetown, Guyana.

With a spot in the 5th/6th place play off at stake, Suriname bullied their much smaller opponents and controlled the painted area to secure the tight win with their stellar rebounding ability.

Farai Stoffels dropped a game high 23 points to go along with 15 rebounds. Serdinio Rozewijn also played well for 16 points and 15 rebounds while Lordenzio Weibolt contributed 13 points as well.

Renrick Masaac had a team-high 18 points for VI while Elain O'Neal had just 11 points in the loss. VI will now play for a chance to be seventh or eighth in the tournament today.

In other Classification Games

Jordan Persad's brilliant offensive game led Trinidad and Tobago to their first victory, 65-45, against Dominica on Friday morning.

Persad, who is the leading scorer in the tournament so far, dropped a tournament high 41 points to lead Trinidad to the win against a Dominica side who simply could not contain the prolific scorer.

Persad took 33 shots to get to his 41 points, hitting on 42.42 percent from the field. His impact on the game was so undeniable that none of his other teammates scored in double digits.

For Dominica, it was another miserable performance with the exception that they scored their highest team score of the tournament in the loss.

Kiefer Francis dropped a team high of 12 points in the loss as Dominica have now officially finished 10th in the championship.

The VI will now face Aruba, who were beaten by Antigua, 85-71, at 1:15pm today, Saturday July 9, 2016.

Typical Tola, when their teams winning everybody and their grandma got praise for them, BUT when they don;t win, that's when you hear about who isn't good enough and who was left out of the team. Why not support your local teams 24/7?
