ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The [British] Virgin Islands could experience extremely hot conditions over the next couple of days, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has stated.

DDM stated on its Facebook page today, June 25, 2024, that high temperatures (87-89F) and heat indexes (102-108F) are expected between 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM until at least Thursday, June 27, 2024.

Prolonged exposure to these conditions can put serious stress on the human body, which can result in heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke.

The Department of Disaster Management is encouraging residents to take the necessary precautions to reduce the effects of the heat.

The VI population is encouraged to keep hydrated, seek shade if outside, take scheduled breaks to reduce heat stress if working outside, and wear brightly coloured loose-fitted clothing.

What do they mean by "COULD"? Today was burning up and by the time I got home, my clothes were soaking wet from sweat. This is not normal heat. My arm sticking out of the window as I drove was very sunburned when I got home. I was only driving for 45 minutes and my shirt line was very visible on my arm. Stay inside as much as you can because the ozone layer seemed very weak today.
