CNC established to lead discussion

The CNC has been established to lead discussions with the Government of the United Kingdom regarding the reform and modernisation of the Territory’s Constitution.

On April 21, the Cabinet and the House of Assembly approved the composition of the CNC to negotiate a new Constitution on behalf of the people of the Virgin Islands. This decision represents a significant step forward in the constitutional review process, nearly two decades after the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007, came into effect on June 15, 2007.

The CNC, which was approved in the House of Assembly without opposition or debate, will be led by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7). The committee includes Deputy Premier and Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Hon. Julian Fraser RA (R3); Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Kye M. Rymer (R5); Minister for Education, Youth Affairs, and Sports, Hon. Sharie B. de Castro (AL); Attorney General, Hon. Dawn J. Smith; Chair of the 2005 Constitutional Review Commission, Mr. Gerard St. C. Farara, KC; Hon. Ronnie W. Skelton (AL); Opposition Leader Hon. Marlon A. Penn (R8); Chair of the 2023 Constitutional Review Commission, Mrs. Lisa E. Penn Lettsome; and member of the 2023 Constitutional Review Commission, Mrs. Maya Barry.

Fellow Virgin Islanders and residents lets overwhelmingly attend these meeting. We will have to live with the outcome of the negotiations so let’s make our voices heard loudly. The the CNC team is representing the BVI so must they must wing off to London knowing what we want. Thus is once ink a decade opportunity, so we and our reps must capitalize on the opportunity. This is the time to not just talk the talk but walk , the walk. Be counted when the roll is called. Let your voice be heard. Let’s us make these meetings more than performa meetings; let’s make them more than checking a block; make them meaningful.

Stupid one quicky public consultation is a waste of time. Sitting in a room on public tv is embarrassing and demeaning. Just a waste of time. The public will not come out. Why not try surveys and referendums, and answer submissions?

Belongers who were born here aren’t necessarily Virgin Islanders. Belongers who were not born here might be Virgin Islanders. This is the sort of nuttiness these endeavors have achieved to date. Anyway, best of luck to the Virgin Islanders and the Belongers with this. Hope it leads to positive change.
