VI Centenarian dies at 101, days before birthday
Mrs Smith who resided in Carrot Bay would have celebrated her 102 birthday tomorrow, October 25, 2018 and the leader of the Opposition Hon. Andrew A. Fahie (R1) in breaking the news yesterday expressed deep sadness at her passing but saluted her as a historian and a woman of culture.
“The oldest member of my family who lived in Carrot Bay, Tortola, BVI, Mrs Henrietta Hodge-Smith aka Miss Henny, died today at 101-years-old, two days short of her 102nd birthday. Part of our heritage is gone but will never be forgotten. RIP Cousin," said Hon Fahie in announcing her passing.
Wealth of knowledge
According to Hon Fahie, Mrs Hodge-Smith takes with her a wealth of knowledge especially as it relates to the family structure and the culture of the territory, "She could have given you a full outline of any family tree of different families that existed in the BVI around her time… We have truly lost another legend, another foundation builder of the Virgin Islands,” expressed Hon Fahie.
She was the wife of Mr Donald Smith and the union produced 15 children. The centenarian has never lost the credits of being described as a gentlewoman, 100% family oriented, “She was a mother to many… She helped nurture and raise many children. She was a very strict disciplinarian and yet a very fun person to be around,” he said.
Back in 2016 when the century milestone of Mrs Hodge-Smith was celebrated, Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering spoke about his familiarity with Mrs Hodge-Smith, "I know Ms. Henny liked her fish, sweet potatoes and plantain. It just reminds me of life yesteryear, family is important. Her union with Mr Donald Smith produced 15 children, and this in itself is a wonderful milestone," Hon Pickering said.
The management and staff of Virgin Islands News Online extend condolences to the immediate and extended family of Mrs Hodge-Smith.
