ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Caribbean cycling history has been created, with the Virgin Islands-based Albiono Cycling Club Ltd successfully registering with Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). It is the first professional team from the Caribbean region registered with UCI.

Founded in 1900 in Paris (France), the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the worldwide governing body for cycling.

Albiono Cycling Club Ltd was formed in October 2023 by the long-serving President of the BVI Cycling Federation, Darel Christopher Sr.

Team Albiono, under Darel's leadership, boasts a roster of cyclists from diverse corners of the globe. One of its members is national cyclist Darel Christopher Jr.

‘Significant milestone for Caribbean’

The formation of Team Albiono and being registered with the UCI marks a significant milestone for the Caribbean region, as it enables the team to develop and register professional cyclists right here in the Virgin Islands.

“Previously, aspiring cyclists had to seek opportunities in larger countries, where they often faced challenges and inadequate support. Now, we can provide a structured pathway for their professional growth within our own region,” according to Christopher Sr, himself a former competitive cyclist.

On the cards for Albiono Cycling Club Ltd is the construction of a BMX track, which Christopher Sr consider a vital step in promoting this rapidly growing discipline.

“A safe and well-equipped facility will not only encourage youth participation but also provide parents with confidence in the sport accessibility and safety,” the BVI Cycling Federation President of 16 years stated.

To bring these initiatives to fruition, according to Christopher Sr, collaboration is essential.

“We seek strategic partnerships and sponsorships to help drive the continued growth of cycling across multiple disciplines in the Virgin Islands. Together, we can create a sustainable and thriving future for the sport.”
