ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Opposition Member and Chairman of Progressives United (PU) Hon Julian Fraser, RA on the issue of UK pressure to legalise same-sex marriage, said in the past, that the territory has avoided the issue, “like a plague”.

Further, he said as part of that avoidance, the Virgin Islands (VI) had “wished for the British Government to impose imperial legislation upon us.” Howevver, in speaking directly to Premier and Minister of Finance, Andrew A. Fahie (R1) he said, “It’s an issue you [Premier] has to face… your government has to face it, it’s not something that’s you could avoid or walk away from.”

Show Leadership – Fraser

Hon Fraser during his inaugural address to the House of Assembly (HoA), on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, further implored new Premier Fahie to, “Show that you have leadership skills, show that you have tenacity that I always thought that you have and deal with these issues.”

Hon Fraser told said he made several efforts to contact Premier Fahie by phone to congratulate him, while noting that for the good of the country, they all have no choice but to work together.

“I too have no issues working together with you all because I know that we are due for a constitutional advancement in this territory, which should have happened in the last administration and didn’t.”

According to Fraser, “Only the best among us will get proper results for this territory,” he said that the British Government is aware that the VI has squandered every opportunity given to them to build on institutions.

Independence

“People talk about independence and self-determination... The question they must ask themselves is are we prepared. Have we build our institutions on which we can stand on our own?” Mr Fraser questioned.

He says the VI still doesn’t have its own currency and still rely on Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, “This institution that you see us here with today, it looks good... the audience is great, and to the untrained eyes as you would say, everything seems ok... but this is the institution we must start building first.”

Further, Mr Fraser alluded  to other issues such as the UK’s attempt to remove belongership status, “those are big issues and I am urging you Mr Premier and as a matter of fact as far as I am concerned you should have been in London right now,” he charged.

Before independence you must get Statehood from England.

@Hey, no. The VI people has a right to self determination with political independence being one option. It does not have to go through associated statehood as its sister regional countries did in the 60s. Nonetheless, as Hon Fraser correctly noted it is not prepared and ready.

Fraser You seem bitter and personal. Your language wasn't the same addressing Orlando Smith on the same dam issue. Breath in
    Breath out. Move on.

@EE. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. IMHO, it would be more accurate to say that people are the downfall of mankind. For sure, white people have played a role, but so have African people (e.g. Mugabe, Idi Amin, Charles Taylor, Obote, Kaunda, Bokassa, Duvalier), arabs (e.g. Gaddafi, Nasser), middle eastern people (e.g. Assad, Attaturk, Saddam Hussein), Asian people (Pol Pot, Marcos, Kin Jon Ung, HoChiMin, Mao) and so on.

The Hon Premier A. A Fahie, having displaced Hon J. Fraser as VIP chairperson, the Hon Fraser bolted from the VIP quicker than Usain Bolt in the 100 meter dash. He never looked back. Nonetheless, if his assertion is true that he tried to ring the Premier several times to congratulate him without assumingly success (why would he bring it up in HOA), this is taking the friction too far. Did the Hon Fraser directed his press secretary to issue a congratulatory communique? Anyway, it is time to bury the hatchet for the good of the territory.

Moreover, several countries used the US dollar as primary/legal tender currency, ie, Turks and Caicos, El Salvador, Ecuador, Micronesia, Palau, Zimbabwe, Timor, Marshall Islands ......etc. ( Dollarization). True, using a foreign currency as legal tender currency limits monetary policy control. Further, BVI is not ready for independence. No problem to using the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.

Just a follow up: in my over 60 years: I am yet to discover any recital crime(we don’t have any hate crimes in my country) Europeans; Caribbean people; Asian people; North American; Central Americans; China people; South Pole, North Pole people) as a matter of fact this territory has over 100 different nationalities calling the British Virgin Islands their home for many many many and to this date(17 March 2019)not one hate crime...
every one is entitled to his or her very personal opinion(just live with it)...another things that is non existent in the BVI is political crimes(in some countries if you have on the wrong colour shirt in certain communities you will get beat down)...so for God in Heaven sake try “go cid down” with racism conversation in our blessed territory)
